Anybody ridden anything from the 2015 quiv yet?

I have a downpayment (from a trade in) on a Puddle Jumper. I have a feeling I am going to hate it. I just traded in a Fling too. Benny raves about it on Bennys Board Room or whatever its called, but Biolos is sending him free sticks I think so there might be some quid pro quo? Who knows...

I tried surfing The Ex Mrs. Two Barrel's Dwart and I just don't get it.

Anyway, anyone been on a Short Round, a Puddle Jumper, or even one of the rocket mods?

My favorite small wave shortie was the DHD Double Shot with SA2s in it. Quad. My Double Shot is not enough foam for my winter wetsweet and winter belly. Ive found that of all the small wave shorties it had the most rocker, least width in the nose, and rode the most like a true shortie...

If DHD would produce a new shape for anything in less than OH, I would not have even started this thread. I still take my Skeleton Key out in waist and up, even thighs with punch.

Did you like the Fling? Was watching a video the other day... Looked fun, but more for a long West coast wave, not a three turns to the beach EC wave. Your thoughts?

Also have a down payment on a Bottom Feeder in the Black Dart technology. Seemed like the Bottom Feeder was slightly better in the paddling dept. than the Puddle Jumper or RV so thats why I went with it.

i cant justify buying boards that are so expensive that i need to put a down payment. many good shapers around here can get the job done for 2/3 the cost, not to mention the put on glass thick enough for the board to last more than a season or two.

Im always fixing my friend's merricks, ...losts, js. They pay all that money for a brand name board with paper thin glass. I try to explain to 'em how those board are made for a completely different wave than we get, except for maybe a handful of days out of the year

Don't get me wrong, off the shelf shapes feel great, but $700+ great? ...not so much.

Dude I actually couldn't agree more. Had bad glass on my last lost board. Its not the brand that I am stoked about. I just like trying new things all the time. Its a very expensive way to get better, but there has been a deductive learning process of what I don't like versus what I do like... I agree 100%.

The Fling was fast but I got it a bit too big for me. It was way too long. It was like paddling a tug boat, and then riding a Cadillac 130mph with minimal turning ability. Im sure its a great stick if you size it right and not get an end of season cheapo like me.

That bean bag model is looking pretty cool too. Agreed that the price on these boards is insane and the glass not all that durable too. Having said that I have more luck with the bigger name brands than the small time shaper. I've had four boards customed from various local/small label shapers and none really did it for me, I think super sharp eye solid etc are good brands for good shapes that aren't outrageously priced

Agreed. Sharp Eyes are amazing. The Disco and the fishy models are the only ones that work out this way except on amazing days.

Rave reviews on the Dions too.

Any board brand that has to have names like puddle jumper, disco, fishy eyes, dumpster diver, potato whatever.....must really be ****ty boards. Fancy names to divert your attention from the abject lack of quality.
I would not buy one for all the tea in china.
just opinion, but I would go see a local shaper to make you a board YOU mentally shape; put it on paper and have a shaper make it come to reality.

I agree you can get better boards and at better prices.
Call Brian Bulkley 760 453-1149 or email him at bulkleysurfboards@hotmail.com He is an excellent shaper and is very available to talk about what you want. I have gotten a couple great boards from him (and at hundreds less than the big name brands where you are paying for their marketing)

BTW he shapes for Lost, and Matt Biolas had him shape him a gun.

Maybe if any local shapers embraced newer, post 1960's technologies like companies like Coil, Proctor, Inspired (for ...lost), Super, etc, then I would use them. I'll pay the extra couple hunny for a board that after a year doesnt lose its spring, turn yellow, easily ding, and suck up water, and depreciate faster. I used my ding repair kit once in the last 4 years.
I would never buy a ...lost poly, for the reasons you all are stating, but the Black Dart technology intrigued me.

    design-wise....YES!
quality factor? um, maybe better deal elsewhere.

if you don't force the durability issue; you may wish you had.

Waiting on my custom 6'1" round up from lost. Had a chance to get custom pyzel and was leaning towards pyzel due the reputation of glassing vs lost. Then i found out they had same glassing for my order. Went with company that i had bought and loved boards from before. Cant wait to give a ride report when it comes in.

    Bean bag looks so sick

if the V2 Stub is considered a rocket mod, yeah, I'm currently riding it and it's good...I'd prefer and more pulled in/less round tail, but it rips pretty damn good, regardless.

Don't know much about the puddle jumper, but I like the shape. From what I can see on the net, there's plenty of rocker, a flippy nose, etc, so it should rip for such a stubby shape.

Like everyone said, lost performance shapes get lite glass (ALL channel islands get lite glass)...but I don't know in which category the puddle jumper falls (both my bottom feeder and couch potato had extra glass and both were off the rack).

Isn't Pyzel shaping out of Hawaii Surf Factory along with Chronic, Bushman, Brewer, etc.? Do they use the same glassing shop or is it different?

Or, and quite possibly is the case, I am just an idiot.....

I just saw the shape today at the shop. Not too rockery, but flippy nose, and for its width a surprisingly pulled in tail that doesn't do the photos justice. I am excited to get it in the water. This is going to give my Double Shot a run for the money.

I love my local shaper(s). The problem measuring volume. Neither of my local dudes can get a true volume count, and for me its critical. If you're a skinny dude it doesn't matter. I am not. I am short and muscley, so my board length/volume situation is pretty critical. I like to get my boards as short as possible and with the right V. I can't get that locally.

I bought an AMAZING 5 Star custom groveler shape that was fun in punchier stuff, but it was not enough volume. I couldn't paddle into small waves, which is what I had it shaped for.

McDermott Shapes has made some nice plus sized sticks for me and the Ex Mrs. Two Barrels of Misery, but I am hesitant to take the plunge and go for another shorty unless I mimic the exact size of a shape I already like. Need to get that V.

idk, for me, paddling into small waves is more about muscle and technique than the board. For instance, you have to take off at the peakiest/most jacked up part of a small wave...and you gotta paddle like hell just to get to that peak (you can usually take off on the shoulder in bigger waves)...then you gotta paddle even more like hell to catch the wave. Yeah, certain board dimensions can help, like a wider nose, but packing too much foam on there just makes the board ride fat and corky to me. That's why, on my next batch of boards, I had the shaper thin out the thickness a tad, but I kept the same length I've been riding.

    not necessarily.

Names are a matter of taste, but Lost boards aren't low quality. For whatever reason, some models are glassed thin, but Arctic foam is top-notch (3-ply stringer, dense foam, etc) and the designs are well thought out and, of course, well tested.

Unless you really know your sh!t, asking a shaper to make a board with only your specific design/dimensions is going to be, more often than not, an expensive disappointment. You're better off choosing one of the shaper's tried & true signature models...maybe adding a couple tweaks to make it "yours".
