Too many to list where I was involved, even more where I was a witness. Out of my many only a couple were directed at me, all the rest originated from me putting my foot down after repeated insult. Easy going people get taken advantage of in this world, eventually you need to stand up, I stood up. Never enjoyed any of them, they ruined my vibe and everyone around me even if I was in the right. It's easier to learn to surf well and most normal people see this and keep a proper distance, thereby avoiding said fight in the lineup.

Yeah man, regardless of what side of it your own, beef in the lineup is a real session killer. It takes a LOT and I mean a LOT to get a negative word out of me in a lineup these days. 99 out of 100 times, I feel things are better left unsaid, regardless of the situation. If you put my board in jeopardy, Ill say something. If its actually a decent swell and one of us might get hurt, I will say something. But if it's not one of those two things, I just laugh it off.

*a**** **n*, winter 2002, when I was still full of p i s s and vinegar. Solid 3-foot OH early morning weekday reeling off just outside the jetty. Oil-slick glass, and a crew of about 12 guys. 4 Boogers, 9 standups. Square heavy barrels at a localized spot that is not known for being friendly. Long walk in from the nearest car access. Not the time or place to screw around.

I'm deep on a solid set and drop it only to see a shortboarder going for it. I call him off, but he snakes me anyway and I eat it hard. As I'm paddling back into the lineup, I hear him laughing about it with his two buddies so I paddle over and tell him not to drop in on me again, or he'll f-ing regret it. Dude starts claiming some worldwide surfer nonsense, so I tell him "You're not local. You don't belong here. Shape up or get the f out." and paddle back into position.

Sure enough, the tool burns me again a few waves later on another set wave. This time, I don't say a word, I just take a position down the line from him and wait. His next wave is a solid bomb, he's in perfect position and slotted. I shoulder-hop him waay down the line, look back at him, whip a cutback right into him and take him out at the knees, in the pocket, right in front of the jetty. Boom.

I'm the first one back into the lineup, and here comes the angry tool. Words are exchanged, he shoots his board at me. The first time, I duck. The second time, I snag it, swim away from him and pull off his kook cord at the rail saver. Then I sling his board right into the jetty on the next wave. Buh-bye, mitch.

His buddies try to say something but I cut them off: "Shut the f up and surf, or you're next." Two of my crew paddle over to confirm.

Peaceful session after that with everbody minding their p's and q's. Jetty boy either didn't bring a spare board or found a friendlier place to surf. I thought there might be action on the beach later, but he was gone a few hours later when I pulled up stakes.

Nowadays I wouldn't step up like that. I'd find another place to surf. There's so many good spots in the world, why beef? There will always be another wave or another session. But, back then, I was pretty aggro and territorial.

There used to be internet video of me cleaning the guy out, (but not the "fight") but I can't find it anymore. If I come across it, I'll post the link. Brought a smile to my face when I saw it a few days later. Lol.

Never seen any fights in the water just verbal stuff. Some summer pro showed to my spot one time in Ocean City and this dude sucked so bad and the interval was long so set waves were few and far between. I cut him off completely and he flipped out and waved me into the beach while talking sh*t. I go into beach tell him i would beat his ass and he tells me he's a local??? Then a hour later I see his fat ass getting into a ford explorer with PA plates. . .ha

It's easier to be mellow in the line up when you live close and get to surf a lot. That's me, and it would take a lot to get me worked up enough to engage with someone on that level. That doesn't mean I wouldn't be grumbling about it to myself and maybe a buddy but nowadays I would just move down the beach, go mow the lawn, or get a bite to eat. In most cases after a couple of hours the sh*thead is gone and you'll never see him again. Had a lot of fights as a kid and teenager having grown up in a poor neighborhood but I hated everyone of them. It might be necessary to beat someone's ass now and then but there's not much pleasure in it.

Seen about 3 actual fistfights in Nj and twice as many shoving matches in 20 yrs of surfing. Too many verbal trashings to remember. Usually our ****ty waves are not worth getting that excited about.

LOL, yeah a friend of mine has that down. People don't know what to make of it and just bug out. I am either on or off, can't pull a nuance for the life of me.

Dog beach in OB. Most aggressive session I've had. At least 50+ people on the peak. Rippers in fluorescent wetsuits all yelling/screaming and all talking sh*t. Everyone was dropping in on each other cause they thought their stickers entitled them to every wave. I saw the same guy get punched 2x by 2 different people. 1st time he was on a longboard, second time he paddles back out on a shortboard. I was praying he wasn't coming back for round 3 on another surf related vessel. I saw one guy ask someone the time and the guy yelled at him to stfu while shaking his head in disbelief and calling him an idiot. Horrible vibes to compliment the horrible water quality. A major reason in my moving back to Hatteras.

Ok here's mine. 32 years ago, 16 years old, Bradley Beach NJ. Sitting in the line up along the jetty, saw a set coming and jumped everybody in line a took the peak. Fell flat on my face in front of the local crew, proned it in and went down the beach. Next day walking up to the beach same crew of guys out of the water and hanging near the snack bar see me coming and yell " kook go home!" Traumatized me almost more than anything in my life. Never jumped position again unless I earned it. Other than that I can't remember another instance where I did wrong and didn't emmediately paddle back out and up to the person I wronged, head down and apologize. A sincere "sorry" fixes most issues in the line up.

There was this one time when I was out in CA. I was rinsing off at the showers, and a crew of local surf tweekers stepped to me and said they were going to "f me up". I broke my board on a couple of these kooks, and dropped some elbows and knuckles on the other two. The other two got up and started to get a few shots in on me...that is when my boy Bodhi jumped in and the tide turned back in my favor. I'll never forget what he did for me.
