I've been out to Fire Island a few times to a few different locations and it's always the same thing. No matter what the tide is, how big the swell is (haven't been out there when the swell is over 5 feet), it's always does the same thing. The wave jacks up right before it gets to shore and dumps into almost dry sand. One time I went out there to beat the crowds while western long island was chest to shoulder high and I got skunked. It just would not break on the outside even at low tide. It's like there's no sandbar on the outside and it just laps onto the beach.

I realize it's a 30 mile long barrier island and it's got to be good somewhere. I'm not expecting a local to tell me even remotely where, just curious at to why it doesn't break when all the other places on the island are working and why it seems that Fire Island doesn't have a good sandbar even at low tide?

I grew up on LI and used to surf Robert Moses a lot. There was a good sandbar break a lot of folks would surf right near parking field 5, but that was also a good 10-15 years ago. I have no idea how it is now. It certainly wasn't a secret then. There were some other good spots up and down the beach if you're willing to hoof it for a mile here and there. Having 4WD is also helpful.

according to the google maps satellite image, there's an outside sandbar running the length of the island. Find a channel (deep spot) in the sandbar so the wave has a shoulder and doesn't just close out. The inlet at the north end has a sand bar that looks like it could have some perfect lefts on a steeply angled south swell.

When I hear Fire Island, waves never enter the picture. I've always heard it was a gathering ground for the alternate lifestylers.

i don't know what part of the island u go to,but the waves are always breaking perfect there.from my experiences, theres inside sandbars, outside sandbars, just sounds like u went to the wrong beach.iv never seen such a perfect set up before, better than my home of nj,vb,obx.sometimes u have to walk.that dumping shorebreak is all I get in north jersey, and it sucks.if I had the cash, gas, and patience,id surf fire island every week

I've taken a boat across to fire island many times searching every beach for breaks. Its mostly shore break. Seems like there is never any breaks from moses until a little west of smiths point. Even the new inlet isn't breaking good. I had wished for a good break there but nothing.
