Every once in a while I enjoy building a small fire on the beach especially this time of year. Usually I end up with a friend or two listening to or playing music and Jeezus forbid a little smoke and a drink . Lately I've been confronted by the local badge wearers and asked to extinguish the fire, good thing they didn't ask me to extinguish the chiba! So whats the big deal with a small fire and a good time other than the obvious like putting it out when I'm finished and cleaning up?

the big deal is that 98 percent of the people that use puplic waterfront places trash it and don't properly know how to extinguish and clean up a fire, let alone place their garbage in a proper receptacle.

Ignorant people are the reason there are rules mang, its not your fault.

    Ryan pretty much nailed it.
It's not just the beaches though, it's everywhere. Unfortunately, there's a pervasive lack of responsibility and little if any sense of stewardship concerning the environment. I'm not sure it can all be blamed on ignorance. Too many people just don't care...Don't want to be inconvenienced...Not their problem...Someone else will pick up after them...etc...
    Sorry for the rant.

When I was a kid in So Calif, we used to take a small hibachi grill to the beach sometimes late in the afternoon/early evening to cook burgers and dogs. Getting rid of the hot coals was always a concern. Afterwards, the coals were dumped into the sand, and salt water was poured on them. The cooled coals were then covered with sand. I believe all that was banned years ago.

We can have fires on the beach... The problem is people extinguish the fires by putting logs in the ocean. Now you have half burnt, half submerged logs in the line up... Most people are only concerned with themselves.

So, let me get this straight, you are sitting on the beach with a fire, drinking and smoking da herb. The po po rolls up and just says to put out the fire and then they leave you alone? Nothing is said about da herb or adult beverages? Seem like pretty cool cops if ya ask me

    THIS ^^^^.

Camped on the N end last year and woke up and these a$$ hats beside me had logs like 2ft in diameter they were chucking into the ocean. I confronted them and they were total d*cks about it.

Should be legal to take people like that out of the gene pool.

In NY, it can be very difficult to get away with a fire on the beach. It's ridiculous but I understand why. Things could easily get out of control and burn the dunes down.

They don't call it Fire Island for nothing- it's been flaming for years.
