Okay, so I have been bodyboarding for years now... I want to switch to surfing... I'm buying my first board, so I am going with a soft top... I dont have alot of money to invest while im just starting out...

Would I beable to learn on this board? http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Triple-...ltDomain_0&hash=item3f152edf67#ht_4622wt_1110

Or would this be better? http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Triple-...ltDomain_0&hash=item3f152e73e2#ht_4893wt_1110

Im leaning towards the shorter one... Could you tell me what the differences would be? Im not sure if I want to spend $200

I just bought the 7'... getting used to popping up, feet placement, sitting on board in surf, practice paddling, etc...

It does everything 200$ will do; ie make 'real' rental alot more fun b/c the basics can be practiced till your blue in the face.

Those boards are crap. Take your $200 and buy a real surfboard off the used board rack. Ask the shop for advice. Heres the nice thing about a $200 used board...after 30 sessions its still worth $150.

Take his advice ... getting a soft top is definitely not the best option ... you can definitely allocate that 200$ to a better stick!

this is great advice. for example, how are we supposed to help you? you tell us nothing -NOTHING- about your height, weight, etc...which would be important to know if we were to point you in the direction of the proper sized board (btw...bigger is better for beginners). go to your local shop & explain your situation. you'll learn a whole lot more & get better value for your $$$.

are those boards even surfable??? they dont look like they would be rideable on any real surf... lol.
the best advice is to hit up a used "real" board.

LOL.... Back in the 80's......LOL...... a friend of a friend who shall remain nameless so as not to bring shame upon him had one. He didnt do bad on it but you have to be a small person to get any benefit from soft tops, which he was........Like child size....

Ahh this brings back memories, i participated in a "teach kids how to surf" day at a local beach about a year ago and after a few hours of teaching we all got on the foam board and had a blast... i dont think i will ever ride once again but it was fun slipping down the line into close out 1" beach tubes.

Definitely go to the local shop and ask for help. If you are at the right shop they will have no problem helping you find the right board and price for you. Good luck.

Yea... but... see... the outside of the foil is flat and the inside is curved. So those boards work good in the southern hemisphere.

Now, the through-the-board leash plug... that's so retro it's futuristic!

WOW- UNBELIEVABLE!!! good eye- that is crazy!!! DON'T GET THAT BOARD- total waste of money- and probably smells like hot garbage too!
Take everyone's advise (plus the other million threads on beginners boards) and get a big REAL fiberglass board- do your self a favor and get a beat up longboard off craigslist for cheap then get a better board next year...

DO NOT GET A FIBERGLASS BOARD.

for a first surfboard i ALWAYS recommend a 8'6" "wave storm" from costco. you cant hurt it and it cant hurt you.

those ebay boards look way too small to learn on. im a decent surfer and i love to take a wavestorm out now and again, they're fun boards

    one sponger to another

8-9 foot fun board or long board in 'glass or epoxy. it'll make your progression more consistent and you will have a product that will retain its life (and value) over a longer time...practice your popups and practice arm paddling with no kick...when you get to a short board you can kick again.....good luck
