looks like my little brother (9 yrs old) is finally ready to try to start surfing. He likes to bodyboard but wants to learn how to surf. Trying to get some advice on the best board for him to learn on. Im thinking about going the soft top route maybe a little cheaper and safer. Anyone have any suggestion on a good board for a 9 year old to start on would be great or if anyone has one they want to sell let me know. Thanks

Check out the min-funboards by Liquid Shredder, or those Catch Surf boards. At 9 years old a softop is a good idea. Get one that floats him like a tanker... which won't take much. 6'9 Liquid Shredder might be a good match. You'll get better performance out of the Surftech softops, but they're still kinda hard... more like thin EVA foam over epoxy/glass.

I was def thinking about the Beater...anyone have an old INT board they might want to sell. Ive seen these and they look pretty fun little more of a "surfboard" feel to them but more expensive

Dont even mess with a soft top.......Get him what he'll be riding when hes older. If you get him a soft top and then go to poly and tell him be careful this one will hurt you then that will always be in the back of his mind. Little kids are fearless so go with it and get him a poly.

the great advantage of getting a finless Beater,....when Im not around, the little one can use it between the flags of a guarded beach......even w/the crowds...its safe......alot more options during the summer months.
