My buddy just got 4 stitches after duck diving into a fish hook. The barb was snagged into the back of his head. He says the guy fishing on the pier pulled the line and it ripped the scalp coming out. I was wondering how many guys can tell a similar story. I tend to avoid being too close to piers when I see lines in the water.
this has happened to me on the south side of the frisco pier. paddled out next to the pier on a nice sized overhead swell. the wind was blowing pretty hard out of the N, so the current was ripping. a ton of guys fishing off the pier. totally my fault. got about halfway out and duckdived a wave, saw the guys line in the water, the line hit my wetsuit top and then bammmm, the hook was in my cheek. started yanking on the fishing line trying to get it out of my cheek, and the guy thought he had a fish on, so he started yanking on the rod and reeling like a maniac. this of course cause me to yank even harder on the line trying to create a little slack, which again caused him to think he had a monster on. long story short i ended up dislodging the hook from my cheek with just a little cut. thankfully the barb only got the outer layer of the skin.
It could give your hand a nice slice if they have heavy line but wrap the line around your hand a few times so you can grab some slack and bite the line before they sink a hook in ya. Not that I've ever seen it done
i was surfing 15th pier here today. i swear i got caught in a line once today. nothing against fishing but to all you fisherman, please don't throw trash off the pier or let you plastic bags go in the ocean. had to stuff a bag and a candy wrapper in my wetsuit because some guy threw them off the pier. lazy man
how long ago was that? By the way, I'm callin BS on that story. First off, Frisco pier has been closed for a while. Second, you are implying that the North wind was making the current rip. Third, if you were surfing the south side of the pier, you'd be in the parking lot. Fourth, Frisco faces south if you try wrapping your hand around braided line a few times and yanking on it you will end up having to get stitches from the hook and from the braided line. That stuff is no joke.
