i'm looking to buy a fish and wanted to know if anyone had any good advice for what size. I am 5'6" and about 170 lbs. have been surfing 20 yrs. i know you are supposed to ride them shorter but not sure what size to get.
We are basically the same size but it really depends on what type of fish you are getting. Is it a retro twin fin, a swallow tail, round nose fish? Assuming you are getting a round nose fish i would suggest a 5'10"-6'0" x 19 1/2" x 2 1/4 - 2 1/2. I had a fish before but it was too long and didn't perform like it was supposed to. If you go smaller than this you will loose paddling speed, etc. This is my advice. I am sure pepople are going to chime in and say..."get a 5'6". I'm almost 6 foot and I ride a 6' fish, etc."
well i am 6'3 and 200lbs. right now i am riding a modern 6'4 fish and i believe its a bit small for me. so i am in the process of getting a 6'3 fishcuit. more foam so it should paddle better.
I'm about your size and have also been surfing 20 years. Tried a 6'0" (felt too big). Been riding a 5'10" and it feels fine but could easily have gone 5'8" My advice - go at least 20" wide with wide point forward and flat rocker for a true fish experience (i.e. blinding speed)
Generally you want to go a couple inches under your height. I'm 6'0", 165 and ride a 5'10"x18 3/4" wide sharpeye. I could have gone a couple inches shorter, but wanted that extra bit of float for the winter.
go wayyyy short, like 5'5, 5'6. and go a little thicker, very very little rocker, with a little fuller rails than a thruster. I had a 5'5 twin fin fish, it was a quiet flight from the 80's, and the thing was pretty thick, and the nose was a little rounded off. That was the most fun board i ever had, it paddled like a longboard, I could shred ankle high slappers on that thing with no problem, and in waist to chest high surf it surfed almost too good. I nearly cried the day it broke, and as soon as i get some extra cash i am getting some one to reshape me a board just like that one.
If you been surfing for 20 years and your 5'6 get a 5'2 I am 6' and ride a 5'6....and it's sooooooo skatey
my new 6'3 is going to be 6'3X22 with a middle width of 2.5 with a slight v shape bottom in the tail along with 1/4inch concave that is its deepest right between my two feet.
you've been surfing for 20 years and need advice on what fish to ride? Is that twenty years surfing or twenty summers?
It's really all about how many waves you want to catch. The more volume you're paddling on the easier it will be to catch waves(especially in a thick wetsuit). It's always funny watching channel markers trying to catch waves on boards that are too short, but that usually means more waves for ME!
