Killer bluefish bite going on in the bay right now. Went out tonight and boated only 2 around 10 pounds each and had 2 straighten the hook about the same size. A buddy was in a boat right next to me and was slaying them. Sometimes it's just not your night, lol. Here is a picture of his boat, two of those on the floor were mine, I donated them to a mako trip they are going on, turns out mako's love bluefish.

Nice!! Looks like you guys kept them, do you eat 'em? It's not my favorite fish to eat, but I love catching them.

Fresh bluefish in the 2-3 lb range is my all time favorite fish to eat. Maybe it's because I grew up eating them... sometimes even for breakfast.

Holy crap what a day this was. Got a call first thing that the monster blues were still on the flats and creaming topwater plugs. I was supposed to go surfing but the wind came up early so launched the boat and went hunting. Found massive schools of fish in 2-3 feet of water just going beserk. Chasing everything, darting under the boat, swirling on the surface. First cast with a popper brought an immediate strike and miss, but they wouldn't give up until they were hooked. These were strikes where the fish cleared the water, really exciting. We ended up boating 15 fish, nothing under 36 inches and lost countless more. Here is a shot of my buddy with one, I made a few videos on my iPhone and will try to get an edit together

Would you recommend a steel leader? or would 60 pound mono work? I plan on getting on it at sunrise tomorrow

Mono would work- just check it each time and replace when you feel any imperfections on the line

Only problem there is when blues are on the heavy feed, you can have multiple fish attacking your plug at the same time from multiple angles biting right through heavy mono or nicking it, causing the fish on the hook to be lost, along with the lure. If you don't want to risk losing a plug or fish, go wire.
And if possible, use single hooks as opposed to treble hooks. The ones you release will thank you.

I would recommend a steel leader if you have one, I fished all day today and never had a bite off. Heavy mono leader material, like the stiff stuff would work especially if you are throwing a long plug but like Mr. Belmar said, when they are slashing at the lure there are so many fish taking a swipe it doesn't take much for one to hit ahead of the lure and boink! It's gone.

Chompers everywhere in the surf zone last couple days. Some black drum in the mix. Took one blue home for the smoker. All blies were typical spring run blies...long and skinny between 30-40" but tons of fun. Still trying to find a keeper striper.

Dammit Zip, will you get lost! Ha Ha. Great video!! I got some surf in this morning. As crappy as the conditions were, it was actually fun. Then went over and threw some lead, caught a couple small stripper and a huge Atlantic herring. Good day
