It's not. It's just an arbitrary magnitude with direction like a vector that's not necessarily in motion. You can either base the direction on last known movement or just make it exactly opposite to the point direction or shore layout....or, and my favourite, you can "predict" the direction it's going to move in when it wakes up.
For an entity that is merely 100% cotton you seem to have a nice grasp of the physics. Good stuff. Now if it would only "wake up"...
