Are Foil Boards The Future? - Are they the future SUPs in the line up? Do we trust foilers? ....Discuss I say if you foil in any sort of line up with multiple people out you are a kook.
They are not the future. Maybe you'll see them in HI or CA on a rare occasion but they will not be taking over your local like the SUP has.
Right now there is but one moron riding them...Laird. He is the only person that has access to waves and knows how to ride one. Frankly, they look boring, as SUPs do.... So who gives a fvck??
Yup, he is one of the few. Frankly I wouldn't mind riding one on open water swells. But they do seem a bit boring; the strapped-in thing sucks in my view.
It could see it popping up places, but i haven't witnessed one yet. I had no clue of the costs, but it seems it's within the $1000-$2000 range. that's sup prices, so yea i can see how ppl think it'll show up. i don't get how it's kook just yet tho. def wouldn't drop in on one of those belly-slicerz
You need a much larger wave with high periodicity for that board; doubtful you will ever see it on East Coast.
Look at the surfing that Kai Lenny is doing in that video, and ignore the fact that he is on a foil and focus on the surfing . He's a talented surfer on a 6 foot board, doing turns and cutback that look like an advanced beginner would do on an 8 foot funshape. slow, clumsy surfing. So yeah. I would say it has a lot of potential to be the future of surfing at my local spot.
add a kite and it gets interesting. i know some spots were one could get some long rides on one here in jersey. if can have fun on a carver board on a flat smooth surface you can def have some kicks with a foil. is it worth $1500 idk.
I posted this last time we talked foils. I found a link that said slater tried it out. And he had a hard time with it. Said it was pretty difficult. If Kelly says it's hard, that's saying somthing So as far as it being the new SUP, I'm not convinced. I'm not saying SUPs are terribly easy. The guys that are good definitely had to put some work in. But there's few of them. Most use it as a crutch. So if the foil is hard to ride, i don't see it having the same effect as SUPs
