Here's the link for the story. i thought some of you may enjoy this since everyone seems to like to argue about religion for hours on end to no avail. always be open to a new perspective. one way can never be right IMO. This is easily one of my favorite short stories of all time now.

This is as much philosophical as it is religious. Solipsism is definitely a trip as passenger of life said. Anyone think like that as a kid, that your thinking mind was the only thing you could be certain of?

I had a "shaman" give me a mixture of peyote, schrooms and belladonna once. I wish I could tell you what happened. No one has ever told me.

Regardless of individual beliefs in deities or assumed purposes in life, there's some comfort in acknowledging the reality of how you are connected to this universe. Every atom in your body is billions of years old. Many of the heavier atomic elements that fit together so nicely to make you, you, were assembled deep inside stars larger than our own. The atoms you've borrowed will someday be reconfigured into something else, but they will still exist billions of years from now.

    yep V, AND
all of our Atoms were made in stars!!!! anything heavier than Iron was made in a supernovae!

when I walk through the forest and I exhale, my carbon dioxide is picked up by the trees and incorporated into sugars and cellulose via photosynthesis, so I leave parts of 'me' everywhere I go...this 'me' gets picked up and used by other things that call themselves 'me'

there is no me, there is no I, only us

No, I am not a communist...

Sorry. 6,000 years. I'm being told it's all only 6,000 years old.

Interesting read, but what grabbed me was the realization, which I've thought about before as a father and a husband, that your life can come to a sudden and unanticipated end in a wink of an eye during something as simple as a a quick trip to the grocery store to pick up some milk. Boom, crash, a click of the fingers - just like that, it's over. Your wife is a widow and your kids have no Dad. You see this all the time in the news. There's no way of knowing. But perhaps it's better than a prolonged, miserable illness or being fully paralyzed and hooked up to a machine and having someone change your diaper for the remainder of your life.
Crap, now I'm depressed. Not a great way to start the morning.

Surfin' definitely helps. I gotta get back out there. It's been since Friday.
Wish I could've gotten my sons (18 and 20) interested in surfing last summer. At times it seems like some young guys don't want to try and learn something new, because they're afraid they might look foolish. They want to look like pros right away and don't seem to understand that's not how it works.

Holy s*** yes! I definitely had a point somewhere between 10-13 years old where I had myself convinced of it. I don't think I even knew the term "solipism" until my 20's. Apparently it's a pretty common thing for children to believe since their frontal lobes are still developing and they have a naturally terrible sense of empathy.

757...thanks, read this yesterday on my lunch break...really makes you think and look at things in a different light, we are so fragile and can die at any moment, take for example the guy from San Diego who died today on a wipeout near Allugator Rock.

    From Surfline:

"North Shore Search and Rescue teams circled the area near Alligator Rock on Oahu's North Shore Wednesday afternoon after a San Diego surfer failed to surface following a wipeout.

Kirk Passmore attempted to paddle out at Alligator's around 9:30am but couldn't penetrate the 30-foot waves. So he tried a second time via Waimea Bay and was successful. But after falling on a wave, he never surfaced. Soon, lifeguards and fire trucks rushed to the scene. Two helicopters and a C-130 four-engine prop plane and a few boats searched the area. His surfboard was found near Chun's Reef."
