For Sale: Al Merrick M13

Why are you selling? What did you think of this board? I have a friend who has one and likes it.

 

$750? What is going on with boards these days? What happened to when they were like $350-$400?

Seriously, someone could make a killing by starting to shape and keeping their prices low. They could really corner the market and get other companies to start lowering their prices to bring in business.

 

I agree X1,000,000. The surf industry is on a high right now. Who really wants the stretchiest board shorts when they're $100 (Hurley phantoms). Not to mention boards, AL Merrick is a great shaper but really unless that board is indestructible it is not worth $750. Wish I had the time and patience to get into shaping, Id be selling boards for real cheap and making money out the axx. Sorry this doesnt have much to do with the thread.

 

Sorry guys prices are not going to go down. The materials used for shaping boards have gone up dramtically, All surfboards, including blanks, resin, cloth, so on have gone up in price. To shape a board yourself, your going to be looking at about $100 for a blank under 6'6", anything above that its going to cost more. Plus the price of cloth, and the price of resin to glass the board, you are looking at $300. Also if you do not have the tools, room, stands then your start up cost is going to be a but higher. Shipping costs raise the prices a ton as well. There is a reason why china boards cost $300, they are brand new pieces of ****. The reason merricks are so high is the amount of glass they use and the craftsman ship in them. Al cures all of his blanks and boards before they ever go out on the racks. Takes a decent amount of time to get a custom.

Back to this thread, The M-13 is a great board. Great travel board and great short board for a bigger or older guy.

 

well, like all things in shops.. they get something for 10$ and sell it fot 25. I think its the same with surfboards.. a merrick is probably bought by the shops for like 250, and they sell them for 620.. and for materials. they just pay the glasser, thats y al merricks have "guru glassing co." on the bottom... or chemistrys salt water glassing or something... its not like they have to buy a new pllaner or stands everytime they make a new board. you buythe tools once. and most of them can be used forever. not just 1 board... its ridic how board go for 700. if you think about it for 7 bucks an hour, youd have to work 100 hrs. thats 4 days and 6 hours of working 4 days not a 9-5 day. a 24 hours day. its insane could you imagine working for 4 days straight and 6 hrs. i dont think it would cost 760 dollars for a computer to shape you a board. the shapers probably buy all their blanks in huge sticks frm warehouses. not like buying a bunch on the internet. surfboards are just waaaaaaayyyyyy to expensive.

 

My last board including foam, fins (glass-ons), resin and glass cost about $140. The labor is what gets you, for me it is at least 5-6 hours of actual work and alot lot of waiting for things to cure etc. If I paid myself $20/hour total cost is about $260 - $300. You would need to get at least $100 profit (above labor cost) which puts you up to about $400. That's probably the wholesale price to the shops. They then mark it up knowing that if the board doesn't sell they can lower the price and not loose their shirt.

$100 dollars profit is not alot of money after all of the learning that goes into making a good board. For my boards other than one board that was great most have been at best mediocre and at worse really strange .
