Yesterday I bought a pair of Futures QD2 4.0 rears to go with my 5'11" sub driver. Does anyone know if these can actually be paired with most thruster front fins to create a good quad setup? I plan on putting them behind my JJFlorence fins for decent-bigger waves and behind my Kinetik Phase 3's for smaller surf. Would I be better off returning them to get a proper full quad set, or are they as "compatible" as they're advertised?
They're honeycomb by the way, and both of my other setups are techflex. Not sure if that will make things kind of screwy
I mix thruster fins up front and quad rear fins all of the time, looking for a nice feel. Definitely try it.
the honeycomb version of the 4.0 are symmetrical foil, which are supposedly better for a Mckee style quad (rear fins close together). I've yet to see a sub driver with a quad option, so I'm guessing you had that custom made(?). The size you got sound perfect and should work well with your other fins...but the flat foiled/techflex version of the 4.0 might work better if your rear boxes are closer to the rail.
1. Yes 2. No I ride mostly quads and prefer them over thrusters and have seriously played around with the fins. I have gone threw practically every fin and it really come down to personal preference and feel. The only rear fin I did not like is the 3.75. Nothing wrong with it but found way to small for my liking...I just bought my first real quad set of stretches for my quad mini Simmons type board and that has symmetrical rears even tho the quad fins are set up closer to the rail....however, I have been very happy mixing and matching. You just gotta try it out and see how it feels.
I considered the stretch futures when I got my mini. I'm running controllers on it now. Thinking of getting a set of fins to tighten the mini up when the surf is punchier. The board slides sideways in bigger stuff. Also considering MR twins and just using the controller trailers. Any thoughts?
I think that a wide tail block will always have some slide...bigger rear fins, like a 4.15 might help it, but IMO, sliding is kinda a trademark of a wide tail block quad...i find putting it on rail hard helps with the slide, but I generally put my mini Simmons quad away when it gets big and bring out my thumbtail shortboard quad when it gets big...that freakin thing is a dream as a quad...fins are set closer to the stringer...for whatever reason, that thing holds a turn.
I've ridden my mini with T1 twin sides (nearly same size as MRs) and controller trailers. It's an excellent/pivoty combo that won't slide. Only neg with that combo is it doesn't perform as well the full controller set way on the inside, when the wave gets super small....but that's not why you'd run the twin sides, anyhow.
Yeah it's a mckee placement, so hopefully they'll be good. And I actually bought it off the rack from my local shop, but I'm pretty sure they ordered it custom or something. Either way it's almost the exact board I would've ordered on a custom sub driver so I'm stoked I found it. I ride it in better waves though and plan on traveling with it, will the 4.0s be big enough to use in heavier surf? I would probably expect to be using my JJF's as a thruster when it's bigger anyway, but just in case I want to mix it up.
if in doubt, go bigger. JJ sides + QD2 4.0 = more area than the rasta set. Rastovich is a freestyle fish slide-master anyway, so his sig set isn't going to be for everybody.
Rastas are essentially F4 front template and a rear qd2 3.75 rear fin...bamboo is essentially a veneer...regardless, I like the in my shred sled...which is a McKee style set-up
lost usually uses a standard quad rear box placement that isn't a true mckee, nor is it directly on the rail...it's somewhere in between both (both my V2 and Couch Potato have the same box placement). Unless yours was a custom that was never picked up, it's probably the same as the rest (not a bad thing). question is: does flat or symmetrical foil fall into that category? In this case, I'm guessing either work just as well.
Alright well then I guess for the sake of $$ I'll just keep them. Unless you think the rastas would work that much better, these sound pretty close to what I'm looking for.
