A few days ago the report for tomorrow (Thursday) had 20 mph offshore wind for Long Island with this swell, but now it is showing 40+mph ENE offshore wind.

All psyched to surf, now it's probably gonna be a mess. Anybody ever paddle out in extreme wind like that?

Been in 30 just not 40...

But make sure there is enough swell or it just wont be worth it.

Great for noseriding the log. You can jump up and down on the nose and the offshores will keep you high and dry. I usually stay out of the ocean once the winds go over 30. Try walking back to your car against that kind of wind with any size board, it sucks.

I don't surf in gale force winds... approaching 40mph. 25-30 is getting pretty radical, but if the surf is THAT good, it's worth it.

yeah I'm an optimistic guy and like to think it's closer to offshore than onshore...

hoping for a few degree swing and things could cleanup.. providing you don't get blown out to sea

It's a big island, and you probably have a car.

It might hold off a bit, either way, there will be windows when it is more calm. I'm hoping for a clean sunset but I'm hobbled and might sit this one out in favor of the easy-going weekend ...

If the wind really picks up to 40 mph you can always surf the north shore of Fire Island.

Been out in 25-30 plenty of times. Like some one else said, that's basically our winter. Never more then that though, at that point I don't think it's worth it, especially since it's forecasted to be ENE tomorrow. If it was forecasted to be offshore for real, I'd check it at least

    lol yup

Truth. The offshore gusts on Monday didn't get above 20 here I don't think, but it was still mad tough on the paddle-in due to feathering lips and subsequent blindness. Made for some ill-fated late takeoffs and thrashings. I don't fancy those. I will trade them for the barrell I caught, however. Was telling buds in the lineup it felt like early NE March with those strong offshores.

It's just hard to make a big drop but then again the wind holds up the wave longer.

    Plus better barrels

Just watch out for your flying board hitting you after you kickout of a wave or fall

I'm sure (in addition to good swell/tide/period) this is why the home break barrelled on Monday.

Bro the two things I've mentioned dealing with on Monday. I don't expect schitt to be handed to me here but those two aspects are very challenging.

That's a bit much and probably on the extremely dangerous side at 40mph

Bro anything over 22-25 is twisted sister even if straight offshore. Yeah, I'm still paddling out in 40-45 DOH in January but probably not past the first or second nor'easter this year. I've been getting very selective with conditions to charge in as I've progressed and there's many days with chop I no longer see reason to be in because it will be a lot of work for very little reward and simply not fun. Not to mention safety issues at some point. All depends on last time you've scored, nahmeen?

Yep... the first one you paddle into, the spray really throws you off. Once you register it it's not such a big deal though ... at least not at Monday's size.

Getting held up in the lip - I got pitched a couple of times on Monday too. On the worst one, the leash wrapped around my legs in a knot and the board yanked so hard that my leg has a semicircular bruise around it. I was wearing a full suit too. Took a couple on the head before I got it off.

That leash is always in the way though. Between this experience and Cepriano's horror story about getting tangled at Gilgo, I think I'm gonna swap it out.

Slashdog, I think you need to consume more of the proteins so you don't bruise as easily. Kinda gnarly how the spin laced you up in a leash knot.

Btw, dis tread is actually all about surfing. You trolls done good!!

Born and raised there... lived on Mass Ave. Surfed there for the first 27 years of my life, and remember it well.

Anything above 30 sucks, once you hit 40 it's like borderline impossible for me and my feeble arms. Certainly bring a board that paddles well. At least the water's still warm, hard to get much worse than 35-degree spray blowing into your face at 40+ mph as you try to paddle into a wave.
