Indeed the cycle will continue. 11X is legit. Maybe jjf can do it. The tour is obviously tainted by money, but some of that taint rubs off on us by way of good surf gear. We all like stuff that works well. I think people watch surf contests because they like surfing. Companies take advantage of that viewership. We (actual surfers) like seeing our buddies get good ones, so it's only natural to enjoy watching the best surfers shred the best waves. I'm not sure about the "people who watch surf contests don't surf, and are gay" theory. The whole country froths over football, and 99.999% of them never even played, or have the slightest relation to their "team". Are all football fans gay too, barry?
That was my first thought as well... The Great Bald One has already announced via the instant grams that after a 4-6 month rehab he is planning on returning next season. If anyone can, it's him. I wish him luck and a twelfth, proving craftiness, experience, good knees and a solid back trump youth and tied-dyed hair every time. I bet he has a really nice mellow winter surfing 6-8 north shore with everyone giving him waves on Anyway, John John is the 2nd coming and I agree with Grumpy Pumpy, the social acceptability and resurgence of longboards in the lineup that occurred in the mid to late 90s ruined surfing more than anything else except for surf cams, Ian Cairns, °33, Firewire, Swellinfo forecasts, and Barry Cuda. and I admit I rode a longboard 2wce this week... sometimes you just want that glide on a mushy wave sh!t wave Roy Stuart, King of the Kooks But every time there's any real swell, I repent like the sinner i am
Even the WSL recognizes it is in trouble and they are having trouble, and that it is humans that are causing the problems--computers, leashes, longboards, etc are not the cause; they are the symptoms. Here you go, from you phagotty cherished Surfline: "WSL Announces Sophie Goldschmidt as New CEO Sports marketing veteran to take over from interim CEO Dirk Ziff in August" And Toagie, you have received no improvements in gear from pro surfing--they are not NASA. Any improvements came from independently minded humans. Once again, you confused causes and symptoms. As for football--viewers like yourself, froth over absolute imbecility in you downward spiraling sports culture. Spoon fed a brain drip of stupidity. I mean, look at how it has destroyed any thought process with zagaff; sad, isn't it?? One step away from terminal imbecility.......lol
You make some broad leaps Barry. How did you ever come across surfing in the first place, if you're above watching others surf? I mean, what got you stoked on surfing if you couldn't even see it? The second you see someone else surf and like it, you're bought, sold, and gay like the rest of us. Do you honestly believe there is no benefit to pros collaborating with gear companies to make better gear? It should be guys like you? Slater made Merrick. Merrick made fun boards consistently based on Kelly's (and others) detailed input. I don't ride them, but those boards work for a reason, and Merrick is only part of it. I have received improvements. They are NASA. Spoonfuls and drips are not equal. I do not watch football, or tv. I see no harm in watching a few heats of firing J-bay before work. It doesn't make me or anyone else a gay, poser, imbecile, sell out; your ego does that. I love surfing, I talk about surfing, I think about surfing, I dream about surfing, I surf, I watch surfing. I am a surfer. Simple.
O Barry is just as guilty as the people he mocks... he's got his Gerry Lopez board that he bought due to his gay love for Gerry.
+1, Barry get over yourself man. Your no more core than some on this here forum. And don't ridicule the term core...embrace it dude! All those NH DPs charging by yourself is core bro! Lopez love...that was good and true. No different than Slater love.
Wrong--did not buy it. Liking a board shape is not the same as following what a particular surfer does, whimpering after him. And you are all, despite your denials, subject to the imbecilities of marketing. I make no excuses for it, but face the fact squarely that it does ruin a sport. You guys relish the ruination .... you are content in the herd. As for being more core, I simply have been at it longer than all of you, even collectively, in some cases. You all grew up in the american culture--you are too close to it to even detect the negative effects it has on your thought process, to the point of fighting those that point it out to you.
Although Barry is a bit thick headed and arrogant, he's right about the WSL. I watch the contests in my spare time. It's entertaining. But iv noticed they started making up these story lines just to get more clicks. JJF does great in first couple events, does so so in one. Which isn't a big deal. Yet they start talking about the downfall of JJF. Its bologna and click bait. All comes down to money. But i don't think it's ruined surfing. I agree with what LB said. Sure you see surfboards in car ads and crap like that, but its really not all that mainstream. Definitely more so than it was. Summers get crowded. But it all fades. You can clearly tell who's a core surfer and who will be giving it up in a year. When winter comes (especially in the northern states where you get snow) those guys aren't out. Its only the core guys out. Sure you can go surf on a small nice summer day and may think wow surfing blew up. But the drop of after labour day is huge. And even more so once it gets cold. That core group of surfers hadn't blown up all that much. The core group is still petty 2 tight knit.
Oh yes they are!!! And in droves. Your term " core surfer" is part of the "herd" lingo. Once again, you are so close to it, you cannot recognize it.
Naw man, it's derived from hardcore (example:Barry charges DP three days a week, he is "hardcore"). Surfers are famous for putting a play on words.
