i'll have to say good man. 3 outta 4. im proud of you. honestly.

mike daniels is the sh!t. love his work. Mctavish, yawn, who cares about him. GSI commonwealther. and Texas, well, i don't mess with Texas. it might be natures prison, but the surfers are pretty damn cool.

now go burn your GSI board.

I agree, MD's boards are the BEST out there. As for McTavish, i'm pretty sure lots of people care about him, he's been around a long time, shaped for decades, and is considered one of the best by many. GIS did him justice with this board, so I don't think i'll be burning this beauty anytime soon, it's too fun of a board to even consider getting rid of, let alone burning. Thanks for the suggestion though, i'll put that in my box of things to care about.

ultimately, surfboards are just toys. i don't really take it that seriously. or anything for that matter. i meet people all the time with GSI boards and don't judge them personally for it.

i know lots of people care about him. but he's just another shaper at this point. the 60's are over and he ain't doing nothing special now-a-days. MD is cutting edge and his head is very in the game. if i were to go out and buy any board i wanted right now, it would definitely be a MD coil. lets see people who have never even seen the ocean and work in a sweatshop top that. i switched boards with a buddy who had one and i didn't want to give it back.

True that man, MD definitely has his head in the game, but not all credit goes to him, gotta give a shout out to the Brasington Bros too, Kirk especially, the wizard behind the curtain. Their technology mixed with MD's shaping is where it all comes together. They are so far ahead of the rest of the crowd it's ridiculous. Working with them was so easy, and the board I got was better than I could of dreamed up. Can't wait for my next one, probably a year out on that one, maybe less, we'll see. I believe it when you say "i switched boards with a buddy who had one and i didn't want to give it back", soooo many have said the exact same thing. Do yourself a favor and get one... forget shaping for yourself for one board, that one board will last you YEARS.

i do ride other peoples boards all the time. and i go for 'unique' usually. i just can't afford it most of the time. when i can though, i definitely want a MD Coil, it's 1st on my list. liked the windup flex and slingshot feeling out of turns. good stuff.

those boards are good in good waves, but more fun to shape/glass than anything else. sanding...not so much. the step-bottom has tons of lift and really loose, but does weird sh!t sometimes. my brother, who laminates all over the place says he's slowly seeing more and more of these (channel bottoms in general). i don't think they're faster, but tons of grip. nothing carves like a channel-bottom.
im also kinda wanting a step-bottom from a guy who shapes under the label LALA. check him out. he has em dailed.

Never ridden a step / channel-bottom but looks interesting, good for you for trying something different. "Unique New York, Unique, New York...."
