Then Barry I ask what is the point of human life if not exploration? By your logic, Columbus would have never crossed the Atlantic because it would have been labeled a waste of money and human life. I just believe we are here for more than chasing the almighty dollar. It is sad to think we are just going to fight over this marble until some heavenly body comes and wipes us all out. Humans are meant to explore and expand our knowledge of the universe we live in. If not that, then what are we here for Barry? I am not saying NASA did nothing for us; however, we went to the moon in 1969, ever since we have done nothing but low Earth orbit, I would call that step back. Also, you can't say conclusively that had those taxpayer dollars been allocated to private companies we wouldn't have achieved the same if not more, at perhaps a lower cost. Elon is launching rocket for half the coast of everyone else....so would you guys rather keep giving those contracts to the Russians or Chinese or an American company?
It's funny, you guys will all get on here an bash Elon together; but, when I try to offer another side, suddenly I want to give him a hum job.... Do you guys just like to get on here and confirm each others beliefs? It seems like it and if that is the case, I will just bow out now and let the circle jerk continue... This thread should be called, "Global Warming: if you think anything besides it's a hoax: you're an idiot". That is what it has turned into.
Hang on, Kylie.....lemme get the Kleenex for you. Holy keeerap, you're in the wrong neighborhood, mister sensitive. Just because no one here is signing up for your Elon Musk Hero Day doesn't mean we're some sort of conspiracy. Despite what you'd like to believe, the facts are the facts. As stated, Musk would be just another South African wanna-be entrepreneur / car salesman without the idiot American politicians bending over for his pie-in-the-sky projects. The conjecture has been on your part, not ours. Y'know, you really, really mouth off just like the dem left who accuse everyone else of being what they, in reality, really are. Fact: TSLA loses money, hasn't had a profitable quarter since day one & wouldn't even be in business without massive govt subsidies / tax breaks. Conjecture: Elon is helping humanity by building $80k roadsters! (said in a high-pitched breathless tween voice) Fact: Spacex wouldn't exist without massive NASA & USAF contracts (read: taxpayer bucks) as well as massive tax breaks / no taxes on its privately held corporate arse whcih never releases financials ergo no one can discern how they're actually doing financially. Conjecture: Spacex is saving money because Elon is at the helm! (said in a high-pitched breathless tween voice) Starting to wakey-wakey, sparky...?
There is much more reason to live than simply "exploration". That narrative is straight from PBS mind set. Exploration need not send humans into space at higher expense than simply sending exploratory units. And don't forget--humans cannot survive in space, and frankly therein lies the added expense. Keeping idiots like our imbecile astronauts alive AT MY EXPENSE via taxes is just not the right thing to do. Spacex is heavily tax subsidized; do they do good work?? Sure. Frankly, who cares? As a species your end will come, and it will not be while living on Mars. Mortality there will be due to lack of sustenance. Evolution will end your existence here, so stop wasting money "up there". You want to explore?? Go climb a mountain, or take some LSD. Or do both, see how that works out!! hahahaha!
And to address this above- are we "meant" to explore because "god" has made us the Crown of Creation??? In his image?? Once again, the Universe did not anticipate our coming, doesn't know we are here, and will not give a rats ass if and when we get snuffed out. You are dwelling in pride; you are not "meant" to do anything. You are but one of a million species, and you are the "steward" of nothing.
So then I ask Barry, what is the point of human life? To just kill time until we are wiped out? That's a pretty shi**y way to look at life, imho. Let's not forget about the tech that would reveal itself from a Mars mission. Look at what we gained from the moon missions: CAT Scans, the modern microchip, cordless tools, memory foam, scratch resistant lenses, current computer guidance systems...the list goes on and on. There are benefits from space exploration beyond just putting a human in a different place.... Also I ask, would you rather keep paying the Russians and Chinese to send our rockets up? Or pay an American company half the cost to do it....Say what you will about SpaceX, it is still better than relying on overpriced Russian and Chinese rockets.
God has nothing to do with it. As Carl Sagan said "we are a way for the cosmos to know itself." As the most intelligent species on this planet, should we waste that intelligence just killing time on this marble? I just think it is a giant waste of the human mind. It didn't anticipate our coming and doesn't give a rats ass is we get snuffed out? Ok, cool....I agree with you there. Still doesn't mean the point of our existence should just be to sit here and kill time until the universe does take us out. If we all know we have a limited time in the universe, should we spend it chasing money? Or should we use that money as a tool to do what's really important....acquiring knowledge. This is just my opinion Barry, take it or leave it. But I would rather live in a world focused on expanding our knowledge rather than chasing pieces of green paper. Call me naive if you want, I just find it easier to get up in the morning with a purpose beyond collecting material possessions.
You have bought in to the mantra of those wishing to suck your finances dry for their benefit. There is NO POINT to human life. You are NOT predestined to greatness; you are not made in the image of god. You are the consequence of evolutionary "contingency"....nothing more. Sending humans to space is a misuse of tax dollars. Humans are included to get "buy in" from tax paying morons and idiotic politicians. Sending machines is a totally different set of objectives--increase in data gathering that FAR FAR FAR exceeds anything humans have ever brought back, or ever will. And you forgot "Teflon", the old story item. lol You just quoted Carl Sagan-- a PBS special artist. As I said--you have been duped. And btw, you may NOT be the most intelligent creature on Earth.
The greatest thing Rush Limbaugh ever said was: if there aren't jobs where you live, than move!!!! The fact is there are a ton of jobs available in this country, it just takes getting the right skills, and that doesn't mean just college. Going from high school to a middle class life working in a factory is over. Any dude sitting around BFE small town America thinking the factory is coming back is a fool. He needs to get some vocational skills and move. Anything else is lazy.
Kyle, in all seriousness. Do you know what a carbon tax does? It punishes a person/company for using fossil fuels. To implement this in theory would mean more companies going green but in reality would force many manufacturers to go out of business or move production offshore to countries who aren't members of the OECD because green energy tech isn't there yet and it is therefore too expensive. (Solar roof tiles for uber rich and high priced electric cars ring a bell?) And it goes for everything, not just car and factory emissions. If you want a burger from US beef it'll cost you $20 compared to imported substandard Chinese beef for $8. So when you break it down in simple terms, people will be out of jobs and forced on welfare and given rations of substandard products from China. Musk is a smart guy. He knows a carbon tax will hurt the little guy and drive his competition offshore or out off business. I'm only offering facts, you admittedly came here with a bias. You know Musk also said humans have to merge with machines or become obsolete, Right? I bet that technology will only be affordable to the uber rich too. I love how you praise him for his saving the world and we'll be living on Mars stuff. Guess what buddy, you'll never ever and your kids and grandkids ever ever be able to afford to move to outer space. They'll be left here to rot in favelas in an Alysium scenario. So yeah go ahead wack off Musk and Bezos and Zuckerberg. More useful idiots like you will be the reason why humanity may become enslaved. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Marshall_Plan_poster.JPG#file
I agree with this, people do need to take responsibility for themselves and do whatever it takes to succeed and not be lazy and wait for sh*t to happen for them, but having said that, there's nothing wrong with bringing the jobs back. If there's a market for it than why not?
Man, you guys have not solved global warming yet? I like my Bermuda grass. It is easy to maintain/Hardy/comes back year after year. I probably cut my grass 1/2 as much as my neighbors with fescue etc. lol...#ElonMuskHeroDay
Not sensitive, just notice you guys like to repeat each other. You, Archy and Barry specifically all continuously push your agenda and call anyone that disagrees an idiot....it's getting a little played out. How am I mouthing off? I haven't called anyone an idiot or ignorant. I avoid the personal attacks and try and stick to the issues we are discussing. You still dodge my point...If you are so sure TSLA is going to implode, why aren't you shorting it. I saw a money making opportunity investing TSLA and I took it. According to you, there is an obvious opportunity to cash in our their demise. Why aren't you taking it? Perhaps you don't believe what you are saying as much as you want us to believe. I could rattle off a list of companies that would have not made it without government assistance. Almost every oil company would have gone belly up with the "depletion allowance" instituted in 1926. As for SpaceX, like I've said before, would you rather we give SpaceX the contracts and tax breaks or continue to overpay the Russians and Chinese to send our tech to space?
Now that is a dystopian view that I just can't get on board with. Carl Sagan was on PBS, so what? That one fact alone nullifies everything he says? I'm sorry, I just don't subscribe to such absolutist thinking. The world isn't totally black and white...
