Unless you're completely off the grid and living in a cave and wearing a suit of leaves, you're leaving a footprint. Stop trying to shame others by holding yourself up as the correct example, hypocrites.

 

I've come to accept the simple fact that some people just DGAF. I just do what I can knowing every little bit helps, but I'm certainly not going to hold myself up as an example.

But people who leave their trash on the beach go straight to hell.

 

I like geoprene because it warm and stretchy. I also drive a giant van that leaks coolant and get's 10mpg. Yin meets Yang.

I also pay to have a recycling trashcan, so I'm basically the personification of Greenpeace.

 

So basically, if you have the ability to post on a forum about how "green" you are....you aren't...really.

 

Well, yeah pretty much. Like I said, everyone leaves a footprint. And if it makes one feel better by spending $$$ on stuff that is advertised by people creating an even bigger footprint and may or may not be scientifically proven to have the ecological impact they're hawking, then it is what it is.

I try to make a different impact. I pick up garbage and broken glass at my local as I walk it. I don't tell anyone, and I don't do it with organizations that advertise it. I don't throw shite out my car windows, nor have I ever thrown anybody's shite in the water. I try to lessen the garbage that I create, and I recycle what I can. These are things that everyone can do to help mitigate what will eventually be inevitable to overcome IMO.

For us that remember, the 70's was a much nastier time than now. Pollution was rampant. Trash everywhere. Lakes on fire. Skies that resembled China's worst. So the earlier movement did some good, things look much better now than back then. But really only at the surface. Earth's population is much larger today and will no doubt continue to grow. The pollution that grows with it will continue to be a problem, and resources will dwindle exponentially. That's why we're investing in colonizing Mars, dammit.

The point being is what Wall St. is selling you is basically BS. The shite will eventually hit the fan, and we're all just a bunch of lazy self-centered ants thinking we are individually making some kind of impact by buying some Jap wetsuite, when all we're really making is a statement. About yourself.

How about just doing your part to stave off the inevitable, and keeping your mouth shut about it? Shaming people into buying stuff or doing stuff or not doing stuff is deplorable. Just do your part and keep to yourself, no need to advertise. It wasn't, isn't and should never be about "you".

Quick example: More than once, I've seen some Eco-types rock up to my local in what invariably is a Tesla, Sprinter or Vanagon and proceed to drop their hemp panties and do their business in the bushes because they believe that the public restrooms are "bad for the environment". I have a dozen other examples too, but this one pretty much encapsulates everything.

 

Can't agree more on picking up your own shit. We have a beautiful spot called Black point, great walking trails and coastline, my neighbor would walk his dog there every day and bring a trash bag, it would be filled every time he came back, and he wouldn't get even a portion. 7 big bags of trash a week from one guy. I will shame people for leaving their shit.

I understand we will not be getting rid of fossil fuels anytime soon, commercial planes, ships, every country's war machine, will take a fuckload of oil, for generations to come. But we can send our umpteenth rover to mars which will run for years and do scientific work and send that data back ect on a solar panel? I have mentioned in previous posts my disdain for our reliance on middle eastern oil. I'm sure some of that money paid for Bin Laden, also everything nefarious Iran does is paid by oil.

Yeah, the crunchy hippies get annoying, I agree, but they were the ones that changed shit in the 70's. Most people complain but are too apathetic to do anything (until cancer rates skyrocket and everyone wonders if it's the belching smokestacks from the local factory). In fact it shouldn't just be a hippie thing. Hunters and fisherman should want the deer and fish to stick around.

I've had to do that... emphasis on the HAD. It definitely wasn't by choice.

 

I believe I've said this here before... We could significantly extend the lifetime supply of the world's fossil fuels, and slow climate change, if we worked toward stopping the use of oil for fuel. We should re-direct oil supplies for making durable, recyclable products, and use other energy sources for fuel. To literally burn up all of our fossil fuels... literally "up in smoke"... seems crazy to me, knowing their a finite resource.

For example... why are there a thousand different types of plastics, only a small fraction of which are recyclable? Chemical engineers should come up with ways to either recycle all types of plastic, or make one type of recyclable plastic that has a chemical formula that can be tweaked for different applications. I think we're not investing in that technology because of the cost... manufacturers would not want to absorb the cost of switching over to a different product that would require retooling their factories and processes. It would be an enormous cost, but worth the investment, IMO.

 

I forgot my sarcasm tags in my post. I hope you didn't infer that I was stating our actions don't matter. Not my intention at all. I'm in the same boat as you here. I just do the next right thing, if that means picking up someones trash on the beach or taking the extra time to scrape the peanut butter jar so I can recycle it. I make it a point to throw away as little as possible and pride myself on having the smallest available trash container and not really every filling it up.

Where I do suck though is with deliveries. I buy shit on Amazon all the time, stuff that I could go get at my local for a few cents more without the box and plastic air bag packaging. The convenience is just too appealing. So, I'm just another lazy American Bozo on the bus that puts in a half hearted effort to help out while I wait for the really smart people to come up with ways for me to contribute that don't trample on my ability to get shit that i want when I want it.
