Yes indeed, and a member of The Greatest Generation.

About 20 years ag0 when he went up in a space shuttle as a congressman, I think, a wonderful moment happened here in Florida. Typically, with shuttle launches, you would see about 10% of drivers pull off the road at liftoff time , to watch it go up. You could see it launch 50+ miles away, a breathtaking sight. A hansdful of workers in small offices would go out and watch.

When Glennwent up in the space shuttle, the large building I worked in had hundreds of workers streaming out of the building just before lift off time. We all yelled, "Go go go!" when we spotted the bright orange flame cresting the horizon. There was a chill of excitement and pride that streamed through our crowd. Friends at other office buildings reported the same.

A friend traveling on US 1 said ALL of the cars pulled over to the side and drivers got out and shouted at the sight, "Go go go!"

Such was the measure of the man... He reflected the best of us. His adventurous spirit, courage and the honorable way he led his life is a true legacy we can all hope we leave in our path as well. This was a life well led.

These guys really were/are the greatest generation. My father died two years ago at 92. At 21 he was piloting a B-17.
At 21 I was trying to make it as a punk rock singer...

This thread reminded me of the vinyl record insert in the 1969 National Geographic, "Sounds of the Space Age". I found it online. Some good history. Enjoy!

Your father piloted a B-17 so that you could be a punk singer.

    RIP JG
Lil Chavez did his first book report on John Glenn back in the 3rd grade in 1971. That dude was bigger than life back then. My second report was on Joe Namath.

My 1st two book reports were on Jose Canseco and Bo Jackson, and that was the beginning of my fandom of both and their teams. I have since cut Canseco off the list but Bo still knows...

The one where Bo almost runs over Bosworth (again) is great.

RIP John Glenn, a *real* American hero.

Looks like you might want to dust off that book report on Canseco. He's taking a run at Trump (or as he calls him "Little Buddy") for ambassador to Cuba, or Fed Secretary. Gotta love Canseco calling Rick Perry all bone from the neck up. That's classic. He likes Maria Bartiromo...wonder if he's tapped it with his shrived up member. Oh also, does this qualify as a hi-jack of the John Glenn thread. Just wondering.
