How easy it is to get a board down there? Flying on AA so it would be 150 each way to take one unless I could take my three board bag for 150..... Thanks for the input in advance.
I've been to Nicaragua... There are no surf shops that I'm aware of... So, it will depend on where you are staying as far as the availability of boards to rent. So, I would check in with the place you are staying, and ask them what they have available in rental boards.
my friend in O.C. is actually moving there in a month or so & has decided to build a surfing resort on the pacific side.i know that he has been stocking up on boards before he makes his move & this leeds me to believe they are hard to come by down there.if you like,i can put you in touch with him, this resort is gonna be big bro.astro-deck & LOST... are 2 companies i know he has on board to be invested in the resort.the pacific side has 230 days of trade wind fed swells too,so there is always something & if there isn't you just go down a beach or 2 & hit the outer reef.if anything,i know he can tell you anything you need to know about traveling down there for hitting surf.
I just got back from Nica literally 3 weeks ago. As for board rentals there are a few places you can rent from, but depends on where you are. In San Juan Del Sur there is a shop right in the middle of town, i dont remember what it is called, but it is owned by a dude from Kentucky named David (accent over the a). He is very chill (a little to chill if you know what i mean) and he had a selection of different types of boards for $10 a day or $60 for the week. Honestly all the boards there were old beater boards and only should be rented as a last resort. Funny story, my buddy had to rent a board, so he rented from him for a few days. We took a trip to Popoyo and on the beach walking back to our hostel, some American guy was asking us a bunch of questions about the board and wanted to take a picture of it....obviously something was up, ended up being that it was his board and some locals stole it from him a month ago and some how it ended up in David's hands. Back to on topic, as far as i know there are no rental places in Popoyo. I believe there might be another place or two in San Juan, but do yourself a favor and pay the extra money to bring your own board. Sorry for the rediculous ramble, but PM me if you got any other questions.
It depend where in Nica your going. Like antide, I was there back in december, san juan del sur. Fun little town...with 2 or 3 surf shops. Since I was traveling around down there, I just rented boards. In costa, there was no problem getting a quality board, but it nica, most of the boards were bic, softops or really beaten up. I believe I met David as well, I forget the name of the shop, but I do remember him being from indiana or kentucky....it really is in the "middle" of town. They have boardracks along the sidewalk. Anyways, they have a boat trip thats pretty awesome and relativly cheap (i think 25 or 30 US) for 6 hours or so. That was my best surf day...not the biggest, but 5 of us had a break called tamarindo all to ourselves. Nightlife in san juan is fun, just don't walk alone. I plan to return next winter
Great thanks for all the replies guys. We are heading to Buena Onda Beach Resort. Has anyone been there? Read some good reviews about the place. It is in Rivas on Playa Santana. I am thinking we will take our boards with us since it seems more trouble than it is worth to find a decent rental board without a huge deposit.
