So I got a gopro. Hero 3 white edition. Just want some opinions on the best place to mount it for surfing? On board facing forwards/backwards, or a chest harness? Wrist? Mounted on a handle?

If I recall, the mount itself will allow for the GoPro to point either direction. Personally, it's more fun with it pointed at the person on the board. Play around with that and have fun. I would advise on getting the remote but it gets a little pricey. It saves a bunch of commotion up at the nose while you are trying to take off. You'll need the remote and the wifi backpack as the cam itself is not wifi-enabled. I found out the hard way by buying the remote and realizing later that I needed the backpack. Dope.

you might want to consider your facial expressions too - I had a hard time with it - should I point it in and smile , looks serious or just look terrified - please help

yeah if you put the mount on the front of your board you can either turn the camera forwards or backwards. I've only had it backwards, but that was more for learning and critiquing more than anything. I keep forgetting to take it with me but I want to try it facing forwards a couple times. When I have had it facing me I'm not able to focus on the ocean because I'm thinking about if I should turn it off while waiting for a set or am I going to look good or bad on the wave, am I going to get enough waves for a video, etc.

If I wasn't saving for a new board I would be saving for a gopro. I would use that thing every single day. In or out of the water.

Yeah I just ordered the floaty backdoor for it so I won't lose it on the bottom of the ocean. I'm going to start with the surfboard mount and the handlebar mount so I can rig up a pole mount. And probably a grenade handle so I can just swim around and get some cool shots while handplaning.

I was going to use a head strap for a POV porno

... But anyways I work for CB Ocean rescue so there's definitely some potential for good shots

I like SS's idea of trading if off. Someone sit off to the shoulder in the flats... SOOOOOO much better footage. It looks really good even if you float outside the lineup and get shots from behind the wave. The spray and stuff looks cool....

Just please, please please please, take those things out on a good day. I see so many kids and even grown arse men out these days when it's waist high and they have the go-pros going. Pick your battles.....

And yeah, it's hard to tell whats going on with the mounts sometimes... But if you get a homie to film you, it will shed light on your surfing in a completely different way.

Read Taj Burrows book. He said it best. He admitted, the first time you get video footage back, you think you are out there ripping. Then you see it, and it's the most dissapointing thing ever. The only way to really dial your style in is to see it from everyone else's angle... It educational, put please spare us of the knee high slop on camera. Practice it whenever you want, just don't post it.

Yeah I'm not really a fan of the face shots of people surfing. The only time it really looks cool is in the barrel but even then other shots would look way cooler.

Edit:Just ordered the bar mount, floaty backdoor, surfboard mounts, and POV Dive buoy floating handle. I'm going to rig a longer pole mount out of an old lacrosse shaft. The stoke is real high right now.

Good idea. I mounted a borrowed Gopro on the nose of my board. Not a flattering camera angle on a sponge, let me tell you.

Kinda true. GoPro videos are best when they make the viewer feel like they're in the action so pointing it forward, at least for the majority of the time would be better.

I'm set for a pole I'm rigging my own but I'll ask the other guards to see if anyone wants one.

I bought my surfboard mounts from amazon ($12). Had to place it a little off center due to the curve of the board but still was able to get a good view. Good shots so far, just need bigger waves in NC. Use 1440 to get more hight of the image then crop it to fit 1080.

DO you have the Hero 3+ black or silver? Mines the white from the same line as the plus but it only goes up to 1080 and 30fps. Goes up to 60fps at 720p.

I didn't feel like paying an extra 100 or 200 for 4K video and ultra wide angle view. Would have been nice, but I'm a dirt poor college student so...
