Governor Christie

Like all things the truth is somewhere in the middle. Teachers, and union guys (i.e state workers), may not like his policies like reducing bargaining rights of the unions and requiring workers to pay more for health care. Staunch conservatives might not like his policies of rehab for non-violent drug offenders, and the opening of medical marajuana dispensaries. His environmental record may suffer for allowing some of the fracking wastes to be disposed of here, but hey at least he has not allowed fracking to take place here which can't be said of our neighbors to the north and west (PA, NY). Bottom line is the guy has good approval numbers because he governs from somewhere in the middle. And IMO he comes across as an "honest" politician, which translates as being less deceitful as everyone else in the room. As far as a presidential run, he is not conservative enough, and as conservatives eat their own, he'd never make it past a primary....

BTW it shouldn't matter how fat he is, it should matter how he governs...

 

i feel for the teachers everywhere,they dont have any easy job.maybe elementary and middleschools,but highschool is another ballpark.its like being trapped in a room with everyone on this forum,and trying to maintain order.it just doesnt work.teachers got huge pay cuts,now they are grading teachers on how well their students perform.so if your teaching a bunch of degenerate losers who would rather draw waves and poke smot and not do their homework,the teacher loses their job,or gets demoted,something like that.kids are like drug addicts,if they want to learn they will learn,same way if a feind wants to get clean they will get clean.but if they dont,you can try as much as u can and nothing will change.maybe thats a little overboard comparing kids to druggies,but truth be told,those same kids who wasted away their years in school are the ones thatll be on the corner in 5years begging for change.i know theres a lot of kids on here that are probly in school or college that think its a joke and they can party and not give a phuk,dont rely on surfing to make it in life.yea im stupid,but i shred harder than john john so i dont have to look for a job.maybe you do shred,i dont know i dont care,but do u want to be the guy they make a documentary about that used to shred and fell off hard and became addicted to meth?like anthony ruffo,christian fletcher,archy,and a million more.those guys rip and il always have respect for them,but there no role models

 

Gov. Christie is one of those rare people that can tell it just like he sees it. But, he doesn't leave you all butthurt when he does it. You still want to go have a beer with him. He's one of the few politicians that I feel like I can trust. He'd get my vote for pres. for the simple reason that I trust what he says and he does what he says.

I bet his wife doesn't ask questions like "Does this make me look fat/ugly/wrinkled?" just to get an affirmation that he still finds her attractive.

 

Very insightful post... especially for somebody who's not in the field of education... or are you? What Christie did to public education set us back, and in more ways than one. Not only financially, but it also undermined educators by devaluing the work they do, and the credibility and respect they deserve. NJ has some of the highest performing schools in the country, and consistently performs better overall than the vast majority. Still, his message was, "the system is broken." I disagree. The system works, and works well. There are things that needed to change, and they were addressed only through clumsy reforms put in place by politicians, instead of educators.

But I figured out what I'm gonna do... I'm gonna leave education, and go work for the test writing industry. The money is better, there's no stress, no accountability, and high demand. It makes no sense to stay in education today when I could easily sell out now, jump ship, and chase the money. Thanks, Gov! Now I can make some real cash!

 

Yeah school teachers get a bum deal. They should be payed much higher than most other industries. For God's sakes education is kind of important. One needs to look no further than this forum to see what happens when education suffers. HA !! Got y'all good on that one.

So a few years ago teachers in New Jersey were vilified because they might make $70,000 a year and OH MY GOD get pensions.........oh yeah they get summer's "OFF" to boot. So every jealous bastard in the state carried on a witch hunt to scale back all of these "luxuries" the state's educators recieve

Man, I feel for educators today. You got the "GHETTO THUG/FARM THUG/SUBURBAN THUG thing going on EVERYWHERE.

The rich kids have been so coddled and given accolades for EVERYTHING they do that they are so self-entitled it's crazy........and you got to handle the new Tech Age with every kid sneaking texts and shoot in class. Plus, I really don't know aboot these younger generations, man. Then all of them are on adderall these days, which takinge one extra pill over the recommended dose is the same thing as snorting a bump of crystal........and it's scary as hell.

TOTAL BS my friend , if that were the truth than why does 40 percent of high school grads need remedial math and english in college. The current system doesnt give a rats ass about the kids , one can blame no child left behind , but please devaluing the work . The last I heard WE HAVE some of the highest paid teachers in the country with the LARGEST pensions. Fyi, soon aint going to be no more porfolio, maybe the union players should of told ya that WHILE THEY LOOTED YA FOR 1200 PER annum.

curl... everybody deserves to be paid, have health insurance, retirement accounts... and a decent standard of living. But only if they do a good job at whatever it is they do. If they don't, they should be fired. And we shouldn't need the governor to tell us that.

New Jersey's public education system is one of the finest in the country, and our educators deserve to be paid on a similar scale.

I'm not blaming anyone for anything, except Christie and other politicians making critical decisions about educational policy with no IDEA of what works in education. All of these mandates cost money, yet funding increases can't even keep up with inflation and other increased costs.

And my view of teachers' unions is this... the NJEA has outlived it's purpose. Local school districts with their own unions are the way to go, and should function as a bargaining unit with the local board of education at the community level.

But, curl... your opinions and mine really don't count, when it comes right down to it, do they?

 

granted but in the real world , you dont get a pension for failure . We spend 1 bil in Newark , with what a 55 percent graduation rate , what a shame .

NJAZ i liked your post a few pages back. private education is def the way to go. anytime big unions and government increase, quality and economic constriction ensues. teacher unions and unions in general counter core economics, in a way where maket demand and competition take the back burner to protect employees - ass backwards. unions and the public sector are too prominent and theyre like an economic disease in an ever competitive global world market/globalized world economy. co$tly.

Right... public money going to private institutions is the way to go! LOL your whole argument is so flawed it's not even worth dissecting. You must enjoy public dollars being used for religious private schools too. Better yet, how about that charter school chef getting a 24k raise due to intimate relations with upper admin? Right!!! Privately run schools need more public funds! Imbecile.

 

I think you're misunderstanding a bit. No one is suggesting public money be spent on private anything. My argument is that people should be given moer options when it comes to education. In order to do this, one must first free up some of the money. My god, I am taxed nearly 30% of my income and I don't make that much. I feel I should have the option to spend the portion allocated for public schools on a school of my choosing if I see it fit. So the argument is really to give the government less of a say in how one spends their money, not to use public money to spend on private organizations.

Sorry if I sound like a ****, I am not intending to come off that way.

I give Christie a B...I would have given him an A but he didn't endorse my boy Ron Paul.

thanks for helping there archy with big bulges comment i didnt even know where to start hahah. im not trying to sounds like a prick either, im just referring to the larger systems... not really individual apples within the basket. it is becoming economically unsustainable. broad, core apects of economics... the taxes/privatelly earned money are having trouble supporting all the other crap. enoughs enough.

 

This is definitely a tough area and politics make it more difficult. I do think teachers deserve good pay and a decent standard of living. Their pay should be based on student performance. Since NJ is rated highly, they should be paid more than other areas the don't perform as well.

I do disagree with pensions though. My tax dollars are paying for pensions. That is absurd. They should have a 401 K that they contribute their own pay into and it can be matched up to a certain percent. It should be just like the private sector and that is being generous since my salary/401k isn't paid by taxpayers.

I also think tenure can be bad and good. I don't like when tenure prevents people from being fired for poor performance. I do like tenure though for keeping older teachers around that are performing instead of just bringing in the new blood.

I also think that they should contribute a small percentage to healthcare just like the private sector.

The main issue is the pensions and paying people forever. Cops are the biggest culprit and can retire at such a young age. Then, they can collect a pension and also get another government job. They can then get two pensions. This is a joke. Stop pensions and setup a 401K that they pay into. This will help NJ's runaway spending. Otherwise, taxes will never come down. I do think we need to honor existing pensions because they were promised and that was the understanding. New hires shouldn't get a pension (cops, teachers, etc.)

It always baffles me that cops in really nice towns get huge salaries. I'm talking patrolmen here. Then, the cops in Camden and Newark make peanuts. That doesn't make sense at all. Cops in these nice towns take so much out of the local town budget when the resources could be shared across town. These also work the system more than criminals (double overtime, racking up sick time then get paid for it.). It's a joke.

 

Honoring existing teachers pensions will cost the state 12 bil plus in a few years and with 30 bil budget thats a train wreck.

 

I know this is mostly a Jersey thread. I teach in NC. We pay 6 percent into retirement and the state puts in 5 percent. I also have a non matched 401k, We do pay for part of our health care benefits. They are scrapping tenure here. I made more in private sector at 25 than I do now at 49. I like what I do but it is starting to get a little tough to "really" like it. No pay raise in 5 years... A lot more students per teacher...summers off are cool but I coach a fall sport so I'm back in the grind in Mid-August.

 

Yes it is. And who do you blame... teachers or politicians?
