Sorry to hear that. Teachers in NJ do really well for the most part. I know plenty that make more than me in the private sector. I think tenure can work as long as performance is still an indicator for termination, raises, etc. I just think a compromise should be made. Future hires have to pay into their 401k and pay into healthcare. Cops shouldn't be able to retire at such a young age and collect a ridiculous pension. They are public servants. It reminds me of a bit that George Carlin talked about if you ever got pulled over for speeding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEeVFhKz4UY
I'd like to point out that Swellinfo's most honorable memebers, LBCrew and CREWBY on CBS, are educators. They deserve to get compensated well. I don't think it's a coincidence that they are are in the education business and are both fine citizens. Really, I wouldn't want to teach youse guys' punk-arse kids these days. "Rat, these kids today..... they aren't even listening to Aerosimth." Fast Times reference number 15. My God how can people be upset at teachers getting payed?!? Get upset at some no-talent rap guy getting millions because he can rhyme words at the end of a sentence. Get upset at billionaires who have lower tax rates than you. Get upset that corporations do everything they can to weasel out of paying their fair share. People b!tch about the federal governement and taxes but they sure use the "free" services they get. My favorites are the anti-big government types who all of a sudden have a change of heart when disaster strikes them. Then they have their hand out to the feds. So tax dollars pay for pensions? So what. If it wasn't going to them it go somewhere else. Cutting teacher and police pensions ain't going to fatten your wallet. Everybody hates taxes. But they call the police when they hear something go bump in the night. They drive on America's vast network of roadways. They get lost in the woods and expect the authorities to find them. They send their kids to public schools. They go to Libraries(or used to). When the hurricane or tornado destroys their house they expect federal aid money.......I mean I could go on and on here.....
I'm talking about cops in towns that don't have any crime. Give me a break. Cops in those towns don't deserved to be paid that high and they definitely don't deserve more pay than cops in areas where there is heavy crime. He sits in his car eating donuts and gets paid more than cops who are shot at on a daily basis. That is a joke. Also, pensions for cops retiring in their 40s is a joke. How is that fair? I actually work for a living. Most who work are upset about it. They should have the same retirement age as normal 401k payouts.
Lb please dont read me wrong, I think teaching is a great career . That being said , the PBGC is broke and if the teachers think a fed bailout is coming , think again .
paddington, id rather have a few private companies take care of all of the stuff you exemplified at the end of your post there. lol extreme and impossible because of all the unions and politics involved! and yes... by cutting pensions it would fatten peoples wallets because they wouldnt have to pay as much in taxes to support them. keeping money in th private sector is when true economic growth takes off and jobs are created (wallets), as well as products services bringing greater value (wallets). btw - big business gets raped on taxes and top earners pay a ridiculous amount of taxes already.... while trying to invest, expand, hire, and compete in serious business (look at apples cash issue right now). i think it is something like 50% of the country pay ZERO fed taxes, which doesnt seem fair to me. flat tax is where we should go. as ben carson (2016) said, taking 10% from the guy making 10k a year and 10% of the guy making 100k a year is the way to go. some would say the guy making 10k a year needs the 10% more, but the guy making 100k just put $10,000 in the pot. wtf.
Personally I don't feel bad for cops or teachers, or anybody in any profession that doesn't pay well enough. it's your choice to go into those professions, as it is with any job, nobody forces anybody to sign up for any job or career, this is Murica, the land of the free, where you can choose your own path. It just doesn't make sense when the ones who are complaing about the pay are the same people who were practically begging for these jobs in the first place, but then once the bills pile up they want to cry for more money, as if they didn't know the deal going in. Don't get me wrong, I have respect for those who put up with other people's kids BS or to those who have to deal with the prospect of getting shot that day, but, If you don't think there is enough money in said profession, and don't think you can live well enough off that income, THEN DON'T SIGN UP FOR IT! Simple, choose something else in life to do. Because in the end NOYA... sh*t wrong thread....
15 gs property , 15 gs healthcare, 5 gs disablity , 5gs errors and ommision, 12gs sec, 4gs state registrations , plus state income and fed taxes , thats a quick 100g .Imagine if the private world takes home less, hmmm .
Actually dude, I am NO fan of the police. I only have the upmost respect for Philadelphia cops and the rest can %$#%%$. Rural and suburban cops are the worst. Big attitudes and they treat minor violators like Jeffrey Dahmer New Jersey shore cops are the worst, even in high crime areas like Atlantic City. Those dudes are complete tools. LBI cops should be banished from the earth. They act so tough and then when some kid goes crazy and kills his grandma half the Surf City police force has to take Leaves of Absence because they can't handle it. But they sure acted tough before that. A lot of shore area cops have become part of the Camden County Police Force that took over for the Camden Police Department. Oh man, I hope them boys in Polack Town give it to them good. Welcome to Camden you Jersey Shore b!tch cops......... But then again in this world, there are better targets of working class angst than police and teachers. Look some people get good deals in life. Some don't. You could have become a teacher or a policia if you wanted to.
Let the money follow the child. We need more charter schools and we need to get away from the current school funding model. Let the money follow the child. I think this is similar to the UK. Each child has a certain amount of funding attached to his name. Whichever school he attends gets that money. The students test scores determine how long that funding lasts, whether it be high school, undergrad, grad or phd. This structure would allow good charter schools to flourish and bad ones to fade away. Let's say your kid isn't college material but he does have an interest and ability in the construction trades. A normal high school diploma isn't going to teach him enough to design a HVAC system. But, specialize the curriculum to teach him enough engineering, physics and computer modeling while eliminating time sucks like world history or english lit. from the program and he graduates with enough knowledge to hit the streets with the ability to perform a job. Little Suzy wants to be a hairdresser, her school concentrates on biology, chemistry and marketing. NJSHRED Jr. goes to a school that preps them for finance with economics, marketing and communication. Businesses (schools) would compete for more students which would in turn bring in more money. The most successful schools would be in the highest demand. The lagging schools would either have to change or go under. Parents, not zip codes, would determine what school the child attends. Plus, I would imagine kids would learn better if they were studying something of interest to them versus the general education they receive now.
Ok it's a perfect world.......NO TEACHER PENSIONS...........NO POLICIA PENSIONS........ So how much are your income or other taxes gonna go down? Everybody acts like if we get rid of this, or get rid of that, the government is going to ax all taxes. No, that's not going to happen. The one party who proclaims to be for lower taxes is really only concerned with lowering the taxes for the wealthy. Yeah, they give you middle/lower class guys a bone to make you think you won something......maybe they throw you a rebate check for $100.00..........whoopdedoo. Really, all of this warring about taxes, and how much of an impact has it really EVER had on your paycheck? Hey, Bob Jimbob lowered our income taxes, and I got a cool extra $1000 for the whole year. Beverely Hills here we come.......... Then stuff happens..........and you wonder where this agency is. Oh taxes went down, that agency doesn't exist anymore. More stuff happens and there's no where to turn. Then you blow your tire out on a pothole because no tax revenue means no road repairs. Hey that's what you wanted. Then some intruder hopped-up on meth and a day's viewing of Teen Mom 2 comes barelling into your house sights set on your teen daughter. You call the police.......it takes them twenty minutes to get there. Opps, police lay-offs. Your little Johnny is 15 and doesn't know when I signed the Magna Carta, or can't multiply 7 X 8. Opps, didn't want to pay teachers so now we have incompetents educating the kids.......the F'ing kids man.
curl... I'm not reading you wrong... in fact we probably agree on more than we disagree. The facts are the facts. Things are out of hand... public workers' pensions, student loan debt, municipal bonds... We're in a tight spot, and there seems to be no bright light at the end of the tunnel, either. I work in a school district with some of the highest achieving high school students in the country. But the programs I run are for the opposite end of the spectrum... an alternative high school for "at risk" kids from some of the worst districts in the county and state, and a few vocational programs for kids looking to go straight to work after high school. I have CHOSEN to work here, and have turned down opportunities to work in better schools, with high achieving students. And guess what... I turned down the bigger money that went with it, too. So when people say things like, "teachers don't care about kids," I get absolutely incensed. Because I know first hand the difference between people who genuinely care, and people who only say they care, the latter of the two are more often found in the legislature, and not the classroom.
thank you. someone on a surf forum who understand competitive advantage/quality/ efficient economics.
Just came across this, thought i'd share... http://www.today.com/news/jersey-sh...7-months-after-sandy-80-there-says-6C10052450
Ok I've been b!tching aboot things as they are. Cause I just don't see things being completely overhauled. Yes, people I'm not saying things are great and that I wouldn't change them. Actually, I'd split the country into two and go from there. I'd take the whole west coast and cross the country across the Canadian border states including the Great Lakes States and then down from Maine to Florida. That would be Blue, liberal, patsy America. And the rest of the country would be Red, conservative, skoal, ain't got no shoes nor no book learning America. Then go from there. But Mr. Magoo(yo watch out driving with your eyesight) I endorse this plan that you speak of. But it will never happen because it might make too much sense, and you mentioned "like in the U.K." See now you just labled yourself an European Socialist, and everybody from Virginia to Florida on here will be after ya. Ok crackers, I'm heading to Mays Landing to take care of some bizzznesss, and then I'm gonna fix upon a shred. Winds have been offshore for a little bit now, and Ocean City is looking fun. Actually we all should be out there instead of yapping on a Chris Christie thread on Swellinfo.com.
Agreed, headed out the door in less than an hour for an extended weekend at the Inlet, hopefully winds cooperate and make it fun.
the best teachers are unafraid to teach the truth, when the rest are terrified and so pc.if they give merit pay and end tenure the good teacher will be the first one they target.good teachers are so often bound and gagged by the pc lies we foist upon these children.merit pay and ending tenure will eliminate the best older teachers because they make more.where will they get all these great teachers to replace them?there's not a lot of bright people in education.no one ever thinks these things through.the governor has no idea how to solve the problem.after all these years in two different schools i believe most teachers work really hard and really care.they're getting more than their money's worth out of me.i'm not one of those rich teachers the governor thinks i am.i'm poor, because i chose to teach because it is what i do.christie wouldn't last 5 minutes in front of my students.
the only thing i gotta add is from the stupid commercial with Christie, saying that nj stronger than the storm. Sorry nj but u r not stronger than the storm. Seem like a bad omen. Nature will win every time. been a year and **** still **** up and guess what canoo season almost here again. What do u expect building by a monster. Don't think its gonna bite?
I don't believe I am misunderstanding you one bit, actually. You mentioned how you would vote for CC and then gave your perspective on what will work in education. Chris Christie's administration has been "pushing" more public funds towards privately run schools (charters) over the last few years. Just recently there has been controversy about the big man giving the "okay" to 10 million dollars for a Lakewood Yeshiva (only accepts Orthodox Jewish young men). Since when should my tax dollars go to privately run religious schools? If you do not see an issue with stunts like this, then I cannot discuss the topic with you. In an ideal world, anyone's child should be granted the best education they could have regardless of their SES. First, let's try and define that education.
