Was in a 23 foot Aquasport with twin 150's, 75 miles off shore. Baltimore Canyon tuna fishing. As far as the GW, i'm not too worried about surfing and a great white 40 miles off shore.
There is also no way to prove that was a white shark. If you look at the size of the dolphin it's tiny. Could easily have been a Mako, which makes more sense since it's the fastest shark in the Ocean. Plus if you look at the pic he's bending the the dolphin back to make the bite look bigger.
I experienced something similar when a dolphin swam right under me while I was relaxing on an art mattress just floating around off Sanibel Island, FL. Didn't know what it was until I saw it surface for air a few yards past me.
that's a small dolphin. . . I'll admit sharks make me nervous but 40 miles out is not something I would worry about. Whenever I've surfed in california northern and southern I've assumed that there were GW well within 40 miles. There are only about 3,500 GW world wide when you think about it that's not that many.
I was surfing last January... The 8th or the 10th, cant remember. I was the only guy in the water on the whole island... about 2 feet, offhore though and fun considering. After about 2 hours, I called it and came home. I just so happened to look at the shark tracking app on my phone. Mary Lee was pinged, basically sitting right next to me... About 1/2 mile north, RIGHT in the shallows. The ping was so close to shore, it looked like she was on the sand in the overhead GPS view.... Then she was pinged again about 2 miles off Coligny beach... I didnt see anything at all that day. But she was right next to me... I was surfing between the point in Port Royal and Coligny, so she probably was cruising right by me by a hundred yards or maybe more.... She spent the next week up in Charleston... But she was around. She went in the intracoastal waterways and was all up in my home break... Glad I didnt see anything, but I was little jaded that afternoon after I saw it. It happens, but chalk that up as Im glad the water down here is murky... I was also out the day the Whitey was spotted two years ago all over San Diego... The famous "Shark at Swamis" photo was taken a day earlier. The lifeguards and a surfer spotted a huge whitey on the North side of the OB jetty in South Mission and at the exact same time I was on the other side of the jetty... They cleared the beaches last spring right around this time while my wife and daughter were walking on the beach... She said there were DOZENS of dorsal fins about 10 FEET off the beach. They were black tips i think, but there were TONS of them. They cleared every beach on the island... It happens
The little guys don't bother me at all. I'm scared of the ones that can bite me in half. In Tahiti last year and saw 100's of Black Tips. They'd swim right under you and not even look. It was actually really cool and definitely took my fear away... Now if Whitey swam right below me I'd have a heart attack.
It's all part of the "circle of life". Just don't let them see your fear: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BG6uMsq8PPs
had a nice 5 foot shark come up 12 foot out of the water yesterday..got out and paddled out else were. i would love to get bit by a few migrating black tips my favorite, or maybe hit by a spinner shark.
