We were deployed over in South Africa this summer, got some downtime and when I wasn't surfing we were able to go swim with some white sharks in Capetown. There were 4 of 'em 2 13 footers a 15 footer and then a 21 footer. The pictures don't do it justice it was unreal...enjoy!
Ha-ha absolutely not man. That's been something I have wanted to do since I was about 5 when I saw Jaws. They're fascinating man.
Sick pictures!! When i was in Haliewa i jumped in a cage to swim with sharks! Always has been a life dream for me. Didnt get to see great whites but these sharks were bigger than our cage which was 10ft across i believe. The captain said that only 1 white shark had ever been seen in hawaii and it was about 22-25ft i think. He said the guy who saw it got out of the cage to swim with it since it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. He decided to go skydiving and died doing that instaed of swimming with a white! Crazy.
ahhh theyre just like little puppies...they love it when you stick your arm out of the cage and give their bellies a little tickle
have you seen that footage of 2 guys in the steel cage near the galopagos were the big female white takes some bait on the surface & rolls her eyes back as they always do when they feed.the thing was she hit that bait goin real fast & couldn't stop in time & hit their cage so hard, she broke 1 side open & ended up IN the cage with the 2 guys.she was huge too,13-14 footer easy & luckily, both guys eventually wiggled free out the broken cage, but they were both pinned in there with her thrashing & snapping her jaws for at least 2 minutes or so.1 guy in the back of the cage trying to stay away from snapping jaws & 1 guy pinned between the broken front & the white's gills.it was haneous dude.....
yeah,i thought i wouldn't mind gettin in a shark cage to see whites up close......till i saw that scene go down.....uh-uh,no bro,i'm good right here on this boat deck dude....
I seriously recommend it to everyone if you can do it, its unreal. They come out of ****ing nowhere! They're ghostly. It was funny, the best surf I saw in South Africa wasn't J-Bay it was right off of Seal Island
best surf in south africa is right off seal island??!! now, there's irony right there for you dude. long, glassy, tasty barrels........& 1.5ton great whites that snatch you from your board as they leap from the depths.......damn,that's just not right......
not to get off-topic, but while j-bay may not be the best surf in south africa, it's still nothing to shake a stick at!
I don't think there has only been 1 white shark ever seen in Hawaii... but I was there January of 2006 and I was going to go do this. But then, they said there was a Great White the day before that was about 22ft and I do remember that was a big thing because they aren't there everyday. Would have been wild seeing that.
the only issue i have with this statement is: Jaws was in the 22-25ft range & was supposed to represent a shark that had unusual size to it. i have heard a white this large attacked an abalone diver in cali, but to see 1 that big over in hawaii....i think maybe those ship captains were exagerating just a touch. i know that can get to that size, but it almost never seen or documented. the shark that attacked that abalone diver was also never seen by anyone on the surface.the diver died of blood loss on the deck of the ship & they only realized how big his attacker was when they measured the bite-radius on the dead diver.
I was in Cape Town back at the end of January, did the shark dive thing, it was a pretty intense rush, you got lucky and had a clear day, ours was overcast, water was emerald green and murky from all the kelp. so the underwater shots didnt make it, but the ones from the top of the boat I got were sick. Theres a guy that works for great white adventures down there who's from silver springs MD. ........seal island had some GREAT surf when I was down there.... there are a couple other really good spots on the backside of table mountain where the ship wreck is.
guy there from silversprings,md eh? that'd be cool to go over there & have one of the guides be from back home.i am from wheaton,md myself.....
Yea I really want to go back when I get the chance. I have bigger fish to fry, I'm training for EOD school right now. Surfing is very minimal for me right now
