Having said what I said, if some one rolled up one day and said we'd like to sponsor you and send you around the world to surf I'd throw every one of you under the bus in a heart beat.

The best part of being a pro surfer is that you get so many free stickers and shirts and caps and stuff. It must be awesome to promote so much stuff. Like, I wish I promoted energy drinks and a really cool surf label. To know that all kinds of people were buying sugary drinks and t shirts from China based on the fact that they saw a sticker on my surfboard in a magazine would be mind blowing. I'd like to surf for Mobil and Philip Morris and Monsanto.

Sometimes it comes down to finding the finances which of course come with strings attached.

Maybe there are guys that could have gotten sponsored but didn't... But I've never seen anyone surf at the level of the CT guys. They are so good. The local guys we know that rip, both sponsored and unsponsored, are not even close to their level.

If you think about it worldwide (especially where the waves are firing...Aussie, Indo, Centro, even Cali etc. there so many rippers. I agree with NYNJ though....the Pros are just a level or two better than the best local rippers in most cases. Not to mention the guys who actually try to qualify and never make it. Think about the dozen or so guys on the east coast that are or have given it a shot....not many make it....the level of performance through out the year at some of these world class waves is pretty impressive (regardless of how you feel about the marketing side of it).

It would be epic to have a SI contest. with divisions (swimmers/non swimmers etc). I bet there are a few guys on here that charge hard. There could be a senior division (Barry and...). Spongers....we could have those heats at high tide in the shour pound.and, and we could get sponsors and t shirts made. Put it on face book and twitter and Insta and have it at the most secret spot on the east coast and.....

Another division would be Gear Tossers Division, another would be Proper Leash Attachers.......

middle of the week during trials is slow. Watch it over the weekend (even today) and the crowds will grow. It is actually kind of a nightmare to get in and out of North Shore when it goes down on the weekend (finals etc).

What kind of clothes do you wear barry? No surf logos? LL bean? Marketing makes the world go round and your stocks up.... or down

Exactly... Take Balaram for instance. The kid rips. When he's out in LB he's by far the best in the lineup.

When he surfed in the Quik Pro he looked like kook compared to those guys. Granted he did have to surf against Slater and Fanning, but still... And it's not a knock on him. They are just that good.

Yep, if you rip, there are so many levels of rippage above you. Once was in the water with a woman that was on the WCT at the time (forgot her name), but she was hot, a lot of good surfers out that day, and she made everyone look like we were all on bobbing around on soft tops.

very true.nj doesn't have the bar set too high.its just very hard and expensive to do the wqs which is the only way to make it to the ct.i did my research on it.u pay to get on the wqs, then u have to pay for each event, plus airfare,hotels,etc....
so long story short,u can spend a good 4 grand between wqs cost, flight, hotel, lose ur first round and that's it,done go home,no reinbursment lol.thats how it was for dean randazzo.he'd lose his first heat, then have to sell all his boards just to get a ticket for a flight back home.but dean will always be the best surfer that ever came out of nj
