wow such harsh words for the original op.hey man u want to surf in ur 50s,go for it,dont listen to these douches lol.and phuk eastern lines, whatd they do push u into some whitewater?steer clear of Belmar bro,seriously....u think the waves are good there, drive up the coast 10 minutes and youll see the same exact waves.theres always a few kooks out at these spots,3 people at most, thats where u want to go.u don't want to go where everyone surfs good,go surf with a bunch of kooks so ur not dangering anyone else or getting ur towel thrown in the water.not everyone had their dad push them into waves when they were 2 and been surfing every day since. my best advice is learn the ocean, dont rely on ur board or leash to save u,practice open ocean swimming, like swim outside the jetty and start swimming to the next one.do that a few times a week and youll be able to handle anything the ocean throws at u.as far as performance, that takes time
Damn, those guys at the start of my thread are done messing with me? I figured it was BS, but I was ready to toss it around some more. I was coming back to toss this in... They say that surfing’s an unpredictable sport. One thing I can see that’s predictable is that there are a$$holes here like everywhere else, and you jackasses are making the case for yourselves. The ones with the peanut size brains are always shouting the loudest. Cracks about suicide and cocaine are SO lame and pathetic, how old are you? Keep eating the dirt you’re playing in kids, I’m going past your kindergarten to where the adults are. Keep at it. I guess I'll retract that, maybe. I got nothing to prove to anyone, just to myself. Boogeyboarding? Hell no! I rather take up golfing, and hell will freeze first. I'll leave that to the posers as well. I took up learning to play guitar recently, why not surfing. You think surfing's hard, try learning to play an instrument! And I'm as fit as some guys 15 years younger. Anyway, enough of that yakking. Thanks for the good advice. Thanks especially, cepriano and walkingonh20! I know I have to build up my open water endurance, and I sure don't want to go anywhere and get in the way of the good surfers. I can only imagine how annoying that must be. Any other advice to help this beginner stay with the other beginners, especially as pertaining to the Jersey shore (for Spring Lake and points north of it) etc. etc. would be much appreciated. Yesterday I went to Belmar, but went into the water in Spring Lake...low tide, weak surf, stood up a couple of times, paddled around quite a bit. Figured that's good endurance work. Footwear needed for sure. Grit and balls I got, time is what I'm running out of...aren't we all? Thanks again, y'all.
Dude, check out some of the other newbs posts...they're all the same. It's a Boy's Club, and you've just been initiated. Don't take it too personally. After a while, you'll learn when, how and why to dish it right back. Welcomme.
Welcome Goofy, I also took up surfing after 50(heading for 53 now) and Love It! Not that good at it but it sure as heck beats sitting in the LazyBoy and getting Fat! Have fun learning and don't forget to leave your pride on the beach, learn something every time you go out and do lots of pushups and popups at home over the winter. Better yet, get a heavier suit and get out there.
If you don't want to surf in the winter get an Indo board or balance board of some kind. They work real well for cross training. Even if you do surf through the year, get one anyway to keep everything you learned fresh in your mind through flat spells
Just remember there is no reason to ever, I repeat ever, leave Jersey. You are in the EC mecca of surfing already!
At first I was just gonna let the other guys fock with ya, but now I really hate you, and you ain't seen sh!t yet. Learn some history son, them come back for more advise. If you almost cracked from that, we'll drive you insane.
Damn, boogeyboarding posers! LMAO!!!! Hey Silverback, we are all in it together, just at different breaks. lol There are quite a few body boarders on here and they are some cool fellers. Paddling around on a weak day will def help you. Also sit and watch other people at your local break. Winter is the better time to watch, because 9 times out of 10, those are your locals and they know they break. Never under estimate the ocean, she will smack your arse back into line in a second! Have fun and good luck!
I feel like this is too good to be true... Old kook from BELMAR calls himself a grom. Buys an 8 foot and a 3/2. Troll?
Gromps please refrain from using any sorta surf lingo. U sound ignant when u do . You have no right to call anyone a poser. An 8' ricky carrol is practically a sup. Did u buy one of those strap carriers to lug that bad bouy down to the beach? Dont forget to order the waterproof life alert icase youve fallen n broken a hip
Get some webbed gloves- they will help you paddle faster. Also apply wax to the bottom of your feet or booties to help gain more traction.
Hey silverton! That spot that you mentioned that you surfed the other day is a pretty good spot for learning. It's mellow and the ppl are generally cool there. Plus a good amount of beginners go there from time to time. We just don't like to 'name' spots here on the open internet. Ppl get mad since it could draw a crowd. That is except Belmar- we love to name that spot! Best spot on the east coast! If you go out when the waves are good/bigger- a good rule of thumb is to give the other surfers some room- don't go paddle out at a spot with 20 guys right next to the jetty. And I you do and they are all close to the jetty- just give them some distance- they will actually respect you for that. And oh yea- smile and say hi, don't act like a tough guy. Also looks up the rules for surfing- really there are things you should know- like who had the right of way ect... And have fun. I surf the area from time to time, maybe I will see you out there.
Oh yea - there are a lot of "boogie boarders" on here- and they could ride a wave better then most surfers (like seldom). I think he was a little offended by your last commente. You shoulde probably apologize- he is a cool guy.
Lolz, I'm Ben, and I'm a boggy boardeurs. I love you guys, but no need for apologies. I'll just have some funne with the new guy, unless he's an abandonner.
What the fuk are you talking about? The chinaman is not the issue here, Dude. I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand, Dude. Across this line, you DO NOT... Also, Dude, boogie boarder is not the preferred nomenclature. Boogie body, please. What's happening new guy? body boards and surf mats (riding prone) are a great way to learn about how waves work. lots of folks start on them, some keep using them and get shacked more than anyone and older folks sometimes go back. putting one and a set a fins in your garage ain't a bad idea. Do you like the Golden Girls? If you were one which would you be? Do you know the riddle of steel? Shall I tell it to you? Are you a bowler? Am I wrong?
