Looks like Tommy Daniels at Gulfster is starting a new series of videos. This one is with Chief Meteorologist Rick Davis from NOAA.

In the video, they talk about how there was way more tropical activity this time of year like 20 years ago. Anybody agree? Disagree?

Interesting video. He can be Captain Obvious: "In July there is a much better chance of getting waves in the Caribbean or Central America than the Gulf." Duh.

But I think he has a valid point on 20 years ago there was more tropical activity this time of year. Maybe the summer Bermuda High has shifted south and keeps the tropical waves a bit farther south, and the Sahara dust a bit farther north, or something like that.

I know on the east coast of Florida, during June we usually get a few more waves than we did this year, all the way to the 4th of July, then it goes flat or 1 foot till mid August except NSB and north.

Yeah, Captain Obvious for sure, but maybe he's talking to the clueless? HAHA

You're right about it being flat except for NSB / Ponce (most days) in July. BUT, who knows, maybe we'll get lucky this year?

what's more obvious is he's talking about west florida gulf...the flattest part of the gulf. In june/july, Texas and even Fla panhandle areas get some logable tradewind chop...but that same wind is offshore in west Fla (pancake).

However, contrary to that video, there is a little bump forecast for west fla this coming weekend.

That's debatable, but I see your point.

I'll be getting on that little waist high bump, is it sad i'm looking forward to it? It's better than nothing, so I'm trying to get stoked about it.

not sad at all. You've got everything you need to ride it (log, SUP, etc), so use it...and don't ever take your trunkable water for granted (I have to wear a 4/3 all year)

Probably take the LB and Fish, see what happens. It's the gulf, so I don't expect much. Occasionally there is a rare gem if all the stars align.

I definitely don't take the trunk-able water for granted, that's for sure. I am very thankful for that. But honestly, I don't mind wearing my wet suit, plus that means the waves are better usually.

a gem is nice...but I'll settle for a few of nuggets.

I would tend to agree. Though I don't live in the Gulf states, the weather trends seem to fluctuate periodically. From what I've observed, the upper level winds or jet streams which draws these systems in, have been very far north causing big high pressures in the Atlantic drawing down cooler water on their backside, killing any chance for low pressure TD's to form. That's my take anyway. Only speculation. Hopefully this trend turns...like the world.

Agreed, best not to be picky right?
You may be onto something, one thing is for sure, just when we think we got it figured out the patterns will shift slightly
