Sloop, your location leaves you with options to surf where there is less people. i'm sure you know a few. Surfing lincoln on a sunday in the summer can drive you nuts and can ruin your surf. It's a magnet for the inexperienced and people spoiling for a confrontation. the place is crowded even before the lifeguards go on duty and shut down the other beaches to surfing, while nearby beaches go unridden. granted it can break better than some of the other beaches but not that much better. what would you rather do surf a very congested good spot or a uncrowded spot almost as good?
I'm so glad CB is not as over-crowded as other spots on the East Coast. Line-ups? Please - I cut off all the Wilmington "day surfers." If you pay beach tax, you have the right of way.
On days like this I usually take the boat over to surf Hemlock which is usually pristine (although, you're right, it doesn't break as well as Long Beach unless it's big). But today wound up being a family day to the beach and the boards came along ancillary to the whole thing. Long Beach is good for that because there's surf, the kids can swim in the water with lifeguards watching them, and unlike at other places in Long Beach most people are on logs so I don't feel like the asshole coming up on a shortboard spot and taking waves from people. I also don't like the vibes at some other places in Long Beach. I don't like localism and it ruins sessions for me when I see someone else's session ruined because some locals don't think he surfs as well as them and tell him to "go home." So those are some reasons I choose Lincoln of the spots at Long Beach, and a reason why on this particular day I chose Lincoln over Hemlock.
Uhh, no. It doesn't work like that. Right of way in the ocean, just as on the roads, is meant to prevent collision and injury. Your sense of entitlement based on your taxes doesn't translate to right of way rules that prevent collision . . .
THAT WAS YOU!? I have never had someone backdoor my wave from the wave behind it before. I guess that's one of the benefits of riding a 15' Wavejet. How'd you get a hot pink one anyway?
First off, the ocean is totally different from our roads. In no way would I ever want to see another surfer / person (tourist included) get hurt by a surfboard or by a surfer. Let me get that out of the way. All beaches are set up differently. My spot is in a more residential area with minimal parking for non-locals. I see the same people almost every day. My spot is in front of my house and I have surfed the same spot for over 13 years. The moment we have better than average waves, everyone and their grandmother paddle out. I hate paddling out and surfing with some Raleigh dude who rides for "Team Salt Life." I have my opinion and you do too. Respect mine and I will respect yours. Don't surf my spot. ***I added the following, hence the EDIT*** Going back to the first comment of the thread - In addition to not wanting to see anyone injure themselves, or others while surfing; I do not endorse fighting in the ocean at all. I can hate on out-of-towners and others all day, but I would never intentionally hurt another or start a fight. It's the ocean, not a boxing ring. NC does not have the federal/state funding like our northern states. The town of CB is extremely small and every tax dollar counts. Come September CB turns into a ghost town; yet, it is up to the locals to preserve our town for the summer crowd. Locals support smaller economies, so families have a nice place to visit year after year. Who is going to pay for the costly hurricane damages? Not Raleigh Who is going to keep local restaurants running during the slow season? Not tourist. As for my last post: I don't drop in on anyone - it was a joke.
That was me. I'm glad you liked my pink Wavejet. Of course pink is not available to the public - Team Salt Life riders only.
lol I was just thinking this morning (while having to jocky around some of the local summer pros in their new sleeveless wetsuits- just to get a 3ft wave... thinking they where in a surf contest or something) about starting a post about how much i Love all the summer surfers!!! .... now if only i could get one of those hot pink wave jets....
lol - seems like some of this can be attributed to pimple faced kids with undescended testicles who think they are be tough guys because their daddy owns a beach house
I HAVE A QUESTION: Are "summer pros" guys that surf year round and are actually good surfers? I feel like it's a bunch of kookmeyers calling out "summer pros" as guys that surf, surf winter, surf barreling spitters alone in freezing water and are now stuck to surf tiny waves with a bunch of summer kooks, and YES do get a bit aggro (i'm guilty). Is that a "summer pro"? or are "summer pros", the kooks with all the flashy gear that can't really surf and get in the way and follow you to every shifting peak? Please advise.....thanks.
settle down Food or thought: the national trend for surf related violence including intimidation has been probation including a ban from your break. So threaten some tourist in July and kiss the fall swells goodbye. Or just settle down.
Sure is cold in the winter...even down here in NC. I'm bumping this post for the dude who talked about "summer pros."
yes bro... im there with you- I put my time in with the empty cold peaks....i rather it be that way... summer pros are the ones who only surf in the summer and think that they are the best surfers around.... and 3ft waves calls for a surf contest at the local spot. thats what I was defining anyways...
I hope you go back and read my actual response to your original quote; however, what I was trying to get at was the "summer pros" that has been redefined in the last few post. These people flock to the beach come summer and our rare summer bumps. They get in the way of the people who put in the time....and pay taxes.
Of course. I'm sure they do get in the way. But really if you're going to have a rule about respecting people and letting others have waves—like "don't drop in on someone" or "don't snake"—then surely that needs to apply to everyone otherwise you end up just making problems for yourself because then the understanding is that the rule doesn't actually exist. I also dislike the categorization of everyone who mainly or only surfs in the summer is unfair. Most of my surfing happens during the summer now because I go to college in an inland state (and no it's not on one of the great lakes, either). I only get to go surfing when I'm home, so the majority of my surfing happens in summer, and I'm out there surfing most days, even when it's just riding ankle-slappers on the log. I try to get out when I'm home for Spring Break, Fall Break, etc. and I usually get a few days during those that I can break away from family to have fun in the ocean, but I don't think that my decision to go to a school based on academics (I was assured a spot in medical school because of a program I was accepted to) and environment (small liberal arts college) makes me any less respectable as a surfer. I don't plan my academics around being able to go in the ocean year round, but I don't think that you should have to in order to not have assholes drop in on you and ****.
No worries, Sloop. I completely understand your situation with college. No one said that going to school makes you "any less respectable as a surfer." I recently graduated from a landlocked, private, liberal arts college and I mostly surfed during breaks. Now, I have to balance surfing with 50 hour work weeks. I manage to surf almost every day, year around. I may dislike fresh faces, but I don't snake people that surf my break. If I go somewhere else, I give the locals the same respect that I would expect from new faces. I learned the hard way in Santa Monica a few years ago. Fresh faces get scrap waves.
haha, I've never really had an altercation that led to anything with anyone in the water...but I am excited and waiting till some sap tries to throw down 'cause they will have f'd with the wrong motherf*cker....maybe that's why I haven't had a problem. ...or it could be because I give respect where it's due and follow ettiquette (def misspelled and I don't give a sh*t) and am generally always nice to people...my guess, it's reason #2.
