Everybody simmer down.

What qualifies as a surfer? Probably as many definitions as there are surfers. Don't really know or care to tell ya the truth. I love the ocean I will surf as much as possible as long as I am physically able. In my youth I lived to surf. I lost girl friends, jobs , drove sh*tty vehicles and lived on very little so I had as much time as possible to be in the water. Now I have a wife and kids so priorities have changed. All I know is everytime I get out in the water I feel more alive than any other place. There is a peace the ocean gives me that I can't get anywhere else.

 

You know reading back over this here tread I realize I waste entirely too much of my life on SI.

surfing is just a thing to do.what classifies someone as a surfer,idk maybe somebody who gets paid to do it and they surf every single day all around the world in perfect waves.pretty sure that's none of us.its just like if u ride a bike everyday,smoke herb everyday,i don't go around like yea im a pothead or a master cyclist if that's even a term lol.that's why when someone says to me something like oh your a kook or u don't smoke the same trees as me or I rode a million miles on my bike I just laugh.when I was a kid all my friends lived pretty far away and I rode my bike every single day and I havnt rode a bike in maybe 12 yrs and im still in good shape because of how much I rode.


or someone like your not a photographer,i don't consider myself a photographer and think nobody should classify themselves as a photographer,i took pics all my life,never had a fancy camera I just like to take pics.I literally have like 3 big cardboard boxes filled to the top with photos,do you know how many photos u can fit in a box?if I had more time id take em down from the attic and share some,like I remember there was a bomb scare in my neighborhood,probably like 1992-93 we had the bomb squad out here,i went into the store and kept stealing rolls of film every hour.i got pics of forest fires,crazy car accidents,random stupidness,epic waves.thats why when I see someone that's like 20 yrs old that calls themselves a photographer and calls for 200 bucks to sit on the beach for an hour to take pics of me I say are u retarded?not to question your weeks of experience but your charging me jiffy lube prices here.sheit I got pics of a propane explosion u see the blue flame shooting in the sky,and this is with a disposable camera,not a thousand frames a second kind of camera

I back that.

I used to ski 100 days a year. Now I ski 10-15 quality days a year, most in the backcountry. Im only out when its 20+, the sun is out ideally, or its fresh or responsive snow. No need to waste a day...

I'm also a big wave puss. Thighs to O, thats it for me. None of that blown out ish. Sure, I am a fair weather surfer.

Now for those of you that pay attention, this is going to sound a bit weird coming from me but....... you don't have to fuch every girl you see to be hetero. You can pass on the trolls and 1-3s, and still be a hetero dude. To my point, you don't have to surf every time the ocean heaves up garbage that will propel a board to be a "surfer". Stick to the goodness. Doesn't make you less a surfer. The fact that you have something better to do means you're not a d-canoe.

I have no dog in this fight but to answer the question of how often do we surf.... I too live 2 - 2.5hrs from the East Coast but get easily over 100 sessions in per year still. Not that i'm better than anybody for that, it's just a fact. I haven't done an actual surf journal, but i'm thinking about it for next year. I'll be living 10 minutes from the water come October so i'm hoping to get 300 sessions per year starting then. It's all a matter of how bad you want it.
