It is supposed to be 9 to 10 foot at 12-13 seconds with light offshores tomorrow. So we are talking overhead to way overhead, with barrels. My head has been stopped up for two days, I don't know if it is allergies or head cold, I think it is a cold. Not the flu, I don't feel bad, just stuffed up, head ache, runny nose. Saturday will not be nearly so good. I already told my boss I am coming in early to pick up my check, and then am going home under the blanket.

Has anyone gone with a head cold out in pumping surf and blown out an eardrum or have their equilibrium play tricks on them. I wouldn't care if I was young and dumb, but now I am old and dumb and was hoping for some advice.

Use your head. Chances are u can do it. Here in nj it's cold season all winter when it's pumping. Get plenty of water and sleep tonight and maybe have a nice meal. You should be ok.

Plus I've found that excercise especially surfing disposes of a cold like nothing else the hard part is the begining.

You need to get a big bowl of Vietnamese pho, that should help clear that head up!

    Dayquil helps
But if just stuffed up the ocean usually cleans you out.

i'd rather have a blown out eardrum and be surfed out than not surf at all

If you don't have a fever, you should be good to go. Stay hydrated and come in if you just don't feel good out there. Don't run yourself into the ground or get chilled out there so you don't get pneumonia. Mom says...

9-10' is impressive size. Too big for me...

You are a gingerbread man. You have no idea what a blown out eardrum feels like. You have no ears.

I've gone out with headache and stuffy/runny nose twice.. Both times it was in about 4 foot surf. It cured me. All of a sudden i couldn't remember what was wrong with me and i was perfectly fine, that and it didn't really affect my ability to surf at all.

So i would definitely advise you to go surf... don't miss the rare opportunity to surf 10 footers... wish I was there right now! Up here we don't have anything.

I second Betty, stay hydrated and only you know your limits. Stay safe

The SI Forum is the only place I go for medical advice.

On a serious note, be safe esp w anything affecting inner ear fluids (balance, equilibrium), and doubly so in big surf.

I hear ya Sing-Sing. I too have been dealing with a serious head cold for almost a week now. But, like several have already suggested: hydrate, get a good night of sleep/tonight and give 'er a go manana. I'm gonna practice what's been preached and anticipate a great couple of sessions along with improved health to boot!

Have fun and don't forget to blow it out your nose!

I go to "the forum" for all medical advice. The only thing my doctor does is to make me bend over and cough. I'd rather take the abuse virtually.

Yeah, I'll be the debbie downer... if it's gonna be 10 foot faces and your sick, I would definitely think twice before paddling out. There's a big difference between taking a 4 ft wave on the head and a 9-10 ft wave on the head, even when you're well. Just use some common sense.

I wouldn't have anything to do with waves that size, but I do have sinus issues...

Afrin nasal spray or descloratadine are solid options for a sinus clearing (and solid sleep the night before), they are my saviors in flying or high altitude situations. When you do get out, enjoy the surf, it's been pretty slow up here.
