Do surfers have tiny heads? how do you all feel about wetsuit brands vs the size of the hood attached or detached? I've found quicksilver hoods to be closer to large and actually fitting my head vs Xcel which I find on the extremely small side. I'm in the market looking at a new wetsuit in the 5/4 range with an attached hood but don't want it to be wreaking havoc my neck everytime I try to put the hood on because my head is too big. Anyone on Vissla, patagonia, ripcurl, billabong, hyperflex and there relation to hood size? And for all the trolls out there: Yes I'm talking about my ***** because I wear my wetsuit upside down, inside out, and backwards.
Honestly Soul, I've never heard of anybody having this problem before. Usually when the water warms to around 54 here (middle of summer), I will sport a 4/3 chest zip without a hood, and wear a Rip Curl combo hood/Lycra rash guard under the suit...like a convertible. Get a wetsuit that fits, find a good fitting hood/vest combo, and in theory you'll be golden. Very little to no flushing, but I like my suits with longer necks too
I do have problems with hood size as well--most are cut too tight for me. But more importantly, I find most neck lengths of the hood assembly are too short. That is what frequently leads to the neck strain one feels (if you do) after surfing and paddling around for a couple of hours. The short neck length also affects how the headpiece fits, pulling back on it.
Why is this stupid? It's a serious question unlike a lot of the trollbait that happens on this forum. I feel like my entire time on this forum has been dealing with people thinking my questions are stupid.
I bought two seperate hoods but I really like having the attached hood. Normally if it's warm enough to not have a hood I would switch to a 4/3 anyway.
I have a 5/4 Rip Curl dawn patrol and out of all the wetsuits I've owned ( only quicksilver and xcel ) rip curcl definitely fits the best. Zipper gets stuck though so I guess that's kind of annoying
Are ye Scottish ?
funny thing is....... Yes. Scottish, Romanian, Native American, and Welsh primarily. big ole neck and head.
I wear my ripcurl flashbomb PLUS 4/3 in 45degree water with separate hood! 2 hrs no problem! Only issue is hood makes my jaw ache sometimes, It's xl. Also have flashbomb 5/4 with hood attached when it's 42ish or below! You get what you pay for. I have pantagonia 5/4 r4 way to heavy I've learned! Feels like I'm tied to the board after awhile!
this winter i exclusively used a xcel backzip 4/3 with a detached hood. 38 degree water was my lowest day. I do 2 hour sessions when its that frigid but much longer on warm days... I have a 6/5/4 but I just didn't want to wear all the extra weight. when I lived in MA i only used a 6/5/4 and a 3/2 and skipped everything in between and then relocated to FL so no need except the 3/2.. I just want a nice chest zip 5/4 with a hood that fits my big scottish dome. I don't like detached hoods.
Depending on what brand your looking to purchase, i know some companies will custom make a suite to fit your needs or head in this case.
cant go wrong with flashbomb in my opinion. didn't get because of flash lining that dries quick. bought the 4/3 because its rated to 45 degree water! if your in fla. I would love the flash lining for multiple, daily sessions! dries very quick! the 5/4 has a hood and fits my big melon fine!
