    Sup homies,

being the resoundingly well informed beacon of knowledge that it is for medical advice, I find it prudent to consult the great SWELLINFO for advice pertaining to health insurance.

All said in done, my insurance coverage currently is garbage. I spent over $5000 alone for my knee injury (torn mcl) between doctors and an MRI. OUT OF POCKET. my insurance company didnt cover a DIME. Nor did they cover a dime of the stitches I got in my nose in Santa Cruz last year (7 stitches, with a $800 bill out of pocket) thats more then $100 a stitch! All in all the past 2 years I havent met my deductible despite spending thousands of dollars out of pocket per year, plus normal monthly coverage fees.

The insurance my work as a wildland firefighter offers actually worse then this if you can believe it, only giving me coverage for a few months of the year, and 90% of that being retroactive.

Long story short, any of you injury prone swellers know of a good non-obamacare (also garbage) option with low deductibles? Im willing to pay for quality just as I do with surf equipment when possible.

    1. Depends on which state your in (for what's available)
    2. Obamacare offers low deductible plans but you will pay.
    3. If you are accident prone, low deductible makes sense

I go for the plan with the lowest possible monthly premium. *All* plans have a mandated out-of-pocket maximum of $6,850. So absolute worst-case scenario is you get some horrible disfiguring disease and you'll be out $6,850, which sucks, but most of us can suck that up without having to declare bankruptcy. However on an average year, you'll spend far less than that, and if you're a healthy person, you're not likely to go to the doctor at all. I changed plans this year and went from $700 in monthly premium to $400. The $3,600 I'll save in premiums will fund my surf travel if we both stay healthy, if not, then I'll just surf 'The Wall' with ole' Barry.

Think of health insurance as disaster insurance, you can cover the little ****, but you want protection from the extreme costs resulting from major injury, cancer...

I thought this was a good health care decision article -> http://www.hullfinancialplanning.com/bronze-may-be-the-most-precious-metal-under-obamacare/

Well, since healthcare is evolving to being a "right" in this country, there are not much better solutions than the ones you are enrolled in. You could, of course, seek election to congress, then you will have free healthcare until you die, paid at the 100% rate for you and all of your family, making citizens pay for you.
Other than that, we is all "shiit out of luck".

I am beginning to see the rational for the HSA's.
Fortunately the company I retired from pays for most, but not all, of my health insurance, including my wife. However, the deductible this year went from $500 to $5000 thanks to the idiot in the White House.

One good thing your insurance likely did was lower the cost had you had no insurance. Your insurance tells your doc what he or she can charge for services, tells the pharmacy what they can charge, the labs and so on. It is usually a lot lower than their full fee.

But, plenty of broke people can't use their obamacare cuz they can't afford the deductible and the copays.

Mines 1600 for the wife and me. At least now they can't kick me off if I get too sick and reach my lifetime limit. Thanks Repugnitards.

as long as you pay something monthly they can't do squat to you. Also, never pay the first amount, NEVER! Most times you will be offered lower payment option, as much as 1/2, if you string them along. The doctors financial staff will lie to you as well as the insurance company. Trust no one. Go over bills over and over they are generally full of mistakes. I don't mind paying my fair share but I have found the whole heath care system to be a shameless shakedown.

Once the profit is taken out of the health care picture and a single payer program is implemented, the pain in the wallet will be non-stop. Wages and salaries will never be able to keep up with premiums and it's just a matter of time before the current system will implode because it takes too much of a bite out of the bottom line. Th U.S. is the only industrialized nation on the planet that doesn't take care of it's own with universal health care for all. Yes , it will raise the taxes somewhat, however , in the grand scheme it will be to the benefit of all.

yea all this advice and doom gloom just reinforces what my fire buddy who worked as a seattle ambulance emt for 6 years told me:

"america is the ONLY 1st world country where its common for its citizens to file medical bankruptcy."

The whole thing is a racket and honestly between lack of social services and cops shooting minorities I wouldn't be surprised if radicalized youths tear this country apart and slaughter the pigs at the top.

I myself will probably go back to a country with a fair health care system, like Costa Rica where i had a huge gash in my leg, walked into a spotless clinic in the back of a pharmacy and paid the doctor 80 bux cash for 15 stitches. Still pricey, but their half and half 3rd world medical system puts our "1st world" one to shame.

I mean its disgusting, even in a "state of the art" chemo-therapy warde I was frequenting the past few months I witnessed a RAT run across the floor and cower underneath a table. This is a place that my family member pays over $5000 out of pocket per chemo session to be, and all they get is poison in their veins, a sticky rarely washed vinyl chair to sit in while its pumped in, and RATS running around their feet.

    Da Babylon mon.

lol and instead of adds for Arab women and Russian mail order brides and chevys on this site, literally EVERY add is for health insurance or dental insurance. Thank you swellinfo, for guiding my life through non subliminal target marketing!
