Hey guys/gals, I've been bodyboarding/surfing since 1992. I always had a love for the ocean. These days, I have a family, so I usually just try to get a session in when its worth going. Given that I live on the east coast, my version of good conditions probably vary drastically from some of yours. So given this way of life, I wanted a way to best keep track of the conditions here. I built an android app, which pulls in data from Magicseaweed, and will alert me when certain criteria are met. What i'm hoping to do is get a better grasp on the data from any surf forecasts I see, so I can understand what makes a good wave. Do any of you know of somewhere I can visit that explains the swell data, and how they all work together to make a good wave? I would like to get as technical as possible with this, trying to correlate what I see in Magicseaweed and the data to see if their Star's rating works well for my area, and which criteria make it worth it to go out. I have just come across SwellInfo, I would be interested in using this data as well, I'm going to research that as well. Appreciate any info that might help! Thanks, Joe
I've been doing a bit of research, anyone here use NOAA data directly? I would like to know more about navigating all of their data.
Learn your break(s). Much comes from experience. You don't necessarily need a lot of data to do that.
I apologize for coming in and asking for some information. I know how I did things in the past, and I know there are others that know more than I do. But I guess, based on the responses I got that either no one knows, or no one wants to share their knowledge. I'll figure it out on my own. Thank you for the welcome to the forum.
Hi Eppo, how are you? My name is Chavez. There is no need to go to NOAA or any where else for that manner for information regarding surf conditions. You are now a member of the premier surf conditons/forcaste site on all the interwebs. With the exception of always grossly underestimating the wind speeds at my local spot, this site is highly accurate. BUT THERE"S MORE! As a member, you now have unfettered access to the best medical advise one could get online. I mean, one of the most esteemed members on here, goes by the handle Kanman, is currently struggling to cope with the realization that he has shoulder aids. Where does he go to get a pick me up? You guessed it, this here forum. I myself had face aids two years ago. If it weren't for my compatriots on here, I'm not sure I'd have never pulled through.
Oh yeah, one more thing. There are two threads you go to for a safe space where no one will mess with you. 1. Scantily Clad 2. Who Here has been surfing this week.
Welcome to Ye Olde Surfing Fourme! Please don't let the trolls scare you away. Just stay positive and eventually you will earn your spot in the lineup. (looks like you're already a little upset, but if you take my advise and be cool, you can still be part of the club) What is your one rep bench press max? What is your preferred leashe string knot? On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your significant other's cooking? Does it make up for how short they are? Do you have trouble finding a wetsuite that fits them? Cheers and enjoy!
Nope, I didn't come here for phishing, and I was just hoping to get some info on how others know when the best time is to go out. I also just want to put it out there, because it was brought to my attention, and I don't want to mislead anyone. The app that i'm working on is personal, i'm not here to promote it, and I will be the only one using it, it is something I developed for myself, to better my own life, and give me the ability to better my life by notifying me when the surf is good in my area, not to make money, or make overcrowded spots even more crowded.
Thank you for the reply. I"m definitely going to keep an eye out at the forecasts here! I'm just trying to get the best understanding that I can on the factors that make good waves. Hoping to spend a lot of time at the beach this summer, and want to teach my kids how to surf.
Yeah, you know my friends gave me that nickname back in the 90's, I think it was related to the real thing. I've just been using it as usernames here and there. I completely forgot about it.
Surfing with your kids, or teaching then how, is special. For me, it was up there with teaching them how to fish, ride a bike or throw, catch, and hit a baseball.
Good points^^^ Although I have been surfing for 6 years ish I had the opportunity to teach my daughter.
