Got this gash on Tuesday. Hopefully you can see in the picture how it goes down at least an inch. Guessing I need to fill the hole with something before I patch over it - what material should I use? The waves were well worth it, though...
yep pretty much....just mix the Q-Cell and resin together....Pour in Q-Cell in a plastic cup and add small amounts of resin into a plastic cup until it gets to the desired thickness. Then add your hardner.......mix....then just pour into your ding. Make sure your board is dry though. No dampness. Let it dry...After, sand down and apply a fiberglass cloth on top then just resin and hardner. Let it dry then sand again. You can buff out the area if desired.

Just take it somewhere and pay $20 to fix it. It'll look and feel much better than anything you can do. Now if you just want some practice, then thats something else...
that hole is an easy fix - fill, sand, patch. However In all honesty it looks like you've got a more serious issue with that futures box. A crack is visible on the flange (near the set screw hole and also from the back of the fin out to the rail?), which means the box has been tweaked and the brown foam stain means you've taken on water and it looks like a pretty large area...hopefull not just a dark photo? If so, you might want to deal with THAT while your at it.
I use sun cure for most all of my board fixes. Find it easy to use and without the hassle of mixing. Is there a disadvantage to using sun cure on most dings and punctures?
And how exactly does one get such a ding in that particular location at that particular angle? Please share.
Damn good question. I wish I had a good story to tell you but I honestly don't remember the incident happening... There was one duck dive where I didn't quite get deep enough. My friend was trailing directly behind me (not sure why) and we collided. Didn't think anything of it at the time, but that could've been it.
I had the same issue with my fin box. Except some idiot stepped on my board in the shallows and broke my fin and pushed up the glass on the box. Easiest way to fix that is if you have a dremel tool carve out the cracked fiber glass and make a clean void but don't dig into the box. Just get a ding repair mix up some resin and fiber so you can fill in the void. Than just just use a small strip of fiber to patch over the filler, sand and finish. Dremels are great b/c you can carve whatever you want out easily. If not use a utility knife.
