High School Sports?

Honestly, aside from good coaching, what young players REALLY need to go anywhere in soccer especially is exposure. If you don't go to a HUGE, renowned public or private institution, you will not get recruited and will never really be seen, no matter how good you are. The only reason Towson scouts ever even saw me is because they were scouting the other team.... I felt like I could have played anywhere coming out of high school, but I was from probably the 5th or 6th largest school in my county. We just got NO exposure in any sport really.

Now my wife on the other hand, she grew up in Baltimore. Both of her brothers got recruited to player college Basketball and one plays lacrosse also. Her brother is a white boy obviously, and they played Dubar high every year, which is the biggest Bball public school in Baltimore and probably the state. Anyway, he is a lanking, probably 6'4 kid. He posterized the Dunbar center twice his senior year and the scouts went nuts. I'm talking nuts in the chin, dunk in your face and stare you down on the floor kinda posterizing. All the black girls from Dunbar were cheering for him. It was pretty cool.... But anyway, they went to big schools, in a big market and they both got recruited.

My wife's grandfather is in the Soccer Hall of Fame. He played in 3 world cups, repped the national team for many years. Was the captain for the Baltimore Bays for many years. He was voted the best soccer player in Maryland History in the Baltimore Sun about 5 years ago.... Again, Big Baltimore Market.

My wife's cousin, just retired from the US National team about 2 years ago. He played in 2 world cups, was on the national team for the past 12-15 years or so. He scored the game winning goal in the Concacaf against Spain four years or so ago when we won. He retired from the MLS. He played mostly for DC United and played for the Galaxy for a few years. My wife's cousin's name is Santino Quaranta. He is a really cool dude.

He is 4 years younger than me and is already RETIRED! I hate him for that, but hey, he came from a big school, in a big market, with soccer in his blood.

So, while I was the top athlete in my Family, I married into Soccer Royalty.

I've sat with her grand father after dinner a few times and the dude starts telling me stories about playing against and partying with Pele. Mind blowing.

They actually wanted her grandfather to run for the Mayor of Baltimore years ago....

So yeah, it's not always how good you are, it's who's jersey you wear and the exposure you get.

The best surfers in the world right now, probably don't have sponsors and exposure. The best soccer player in this country, may not even go play college ball because they never got exposure. If you are serious about sports, you gotta get your name out. At least with technology these days, you can make your own highlight reels and promote yourself. If you want to play in college, you better get a lot of footage and a good video editor and be your own agent.

Savannah has a bigger market than most in the state, excluding Atlanta, so you have that going for you. Chatam gets some love. Maybe you could play at Georgia Southern....

Listen, if you are a teen-aged surfer you have no business playing organized sports.

Your teen years are supposed to be your most surf-stoked, F everything years of reckless abandon. High school sports has no business being a part of any self-respecting grom's life.

Surfers don't play high school sports and they sure as heck don't join the math club.

Hey Zues Christmas, is there any sense of the surfer as the anti-society, outlaw rebel left at all ???

Turn on, tune in and drop out. Don't join things. Surfers don't join things.

Real surfers cut school constantly to go surf.

Real surfers drop-out by the 10th grade.

Real surfers, with natural intelligence, don't become smart until after they turn 30. Their teens and twenties are spent getting baked and surfing.

pretty funny too because I dropped out in the 10th grade after doing it twice.its not so much that it was hard,but hard to stay in class.when I got my liscense every kid in the school would wanna ditch and go burn one.ahhh those were the good times

 

Played little league baseball for one year and won city champs. The next year before the season officially started I broke my arm. I was in the street when my older sister's boyfriend backed his 80s camero out of the driveway. I had a couple of friends over and i was skateboarding so I decided it would be a good idea to hold on to the back of the car and go for a ride. Those 80s cameros had the fin all the way across the back which made for a perfect hand hold. The boyfriend of course did not know I was back there and floored it. I was the coolest guy in the neighborhood for about 10 seconds until I hit a huge crack and did about 2 flips.
With my broken arm I could not play baseball and so started my skating, then smoking pot, then surfing, then mostly just smoking highschool career. Was voted most likely to be pulled out of class and searched(I never brought any to school). Looking back now that I am a football fan I wish I woulda played, but hey, I had fun.

 

agreed, your teammates in HS are awesome, while you cant stand your teammates in college, its more like a job
