So a few of my highschool buddies and i are planning on going on two road trips.
    One being over memorial day
And the other over the summer.
My question to you is where should we go.
We live in northern new jersey. None of us have much money haha. So we got to keep it cheap. We're okay with dirty motels or camping as long as its cheap. We're open to any ideas surfing or not. We're just looking to have a good time.
We want to keep the drive within 12 hours
So hey all ideas are welcome or even if you have a sweet road trip story that you want to share...it could spark some ideas

    Thanks

hatteras. one of the best road trips i ever went on was w/ some buddies camping in hatteras during the summer after my junior year. we stayed at the buxton woods camp ground, near the lighthouse, which is run by the national park service. i think it was like $15 a day.
we went in july, i think...this was over 10 years ago now...scored some pretty decent surf while we were there & just surfed & drank & enjoyed being out on our own having an adventure. we did it again the next year after we graduated.
the cool thing is, even tho we've grown up & gone more or less our separate ways (we still talk, but we all live in different states), we still get together in hatteras every couple years. now, however, we stay in the house my family owns there.
so yea, i would highly suggest hatteras for your summer trip...memorial day, i dunno. good luck w/ that.

Post this question on the other forums for a bit of local knowlege.

But... wave opportunities are going to be hit-or-miss that time of year. If you want to get out of NJ going south, the best opportunities are going to be Assateague or North Carolina (Hatteras). Both are nice areas to spend some time. You can fish and camp and hope for surf. The other option is to go north... which is what I'd do. There are decent places to camp on the South Fork, but there will be a lot of other people there doing the same thing because it's a holiday weekend and/or summer camping season. There are also good camping opportunities out on Cape Cod... not on the National Seashore, but adjacent to it, in some of the little towns along the bay side. But the ocean is right there, and there's miles of beachies to hit up. Or... expand your boundaries a little, and haul ass all the way up to NS. Amazing, but again, hit or miss in terms of waves.

OBX or wrightsville. OBX is awesome, but lacks women....well good looking women. Wrightsville on the other hand is not as good quality wave but the women... o the women!

O yeah, if your in HS Wrightsville might be a tease (good bar scene) but you may get lucky and find some college kids renting a house to party with.

My best memory is going with the stockton surf club camping outside wrightsville on some camp site raging all night around a bonfire then drinking JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE all day on the beach... Man i want to go back right now!!!!!

If you aren't dead set on going surfing, Montreal is a pretty cool spot. Some friends and I drove through that part of Canada in college and it was a great time. Assuming you guys are 18 you'll be allowed to drink and there are some fun places to go out around pretty women. We stayed in a hostel so it was pretty cheap...

i have never been to the outer banks, but i think it should be just inside of a 12 hour ride from north jersey provided traffic is moving considerably well. i was hoping to get down there this month or early june, but i have had so many jobs which is fortunate, and unfortunate for me. fortunate that i have been making a lot more money, and the recession is treating my young business well as i am making as much in 25 hours of work as i was in 70 working for a company for someone else. i am still hoping to get out there, and do some camping maybe. one of the guys wives who we were gonna go with works full time as a nurse, and when he's not working he is at home with their baby, and it would be really hard to get him with us, because of that. it sounds like a fun place.

Go to nova scotia..alittle longer of a drive but definately an adventure. I heard that they are shutting the cat down or shut it down. Its the high speed ferry that leaves from maine so check that out before you go.

How long is the drive from Jersey to Nova Scotia? Just curious, was thinking about driving up there myself.

Head out to Montauk. Its probably not too bad of a drive from North Jerz and I believe there's some campgrounds in the area.

    I vote for Wrightsville/Wilmington!

My buddies and I went on a trip like this my sophmore year of HS to outer banks. My mom told me I was not to go no matter what and I pretended like nothing was up until that night. I had all my gear hidden in the garage and literally grabbed it and ran to my buddies jeep around the corner while my mom was chasing and screaming at me... Looking back that was a ridiculous move. I borrowed my buds cell phone and called my mom and all she said was that I would pay the price when I got home.

Anyway, all I thought about the whole time we were down there was the "price" I would pay... but we scored the first two days and got skunked the third and fourth. Got home and the "price" was having to worry about the "price" the whole time I was down there and she took away my board for the first month of summer. Borrowed a buddies board and stashed it at a friends house and still got to surf. If I could go back I would do it again...
