Yeah the only time i don't wear a leash is when it's small and uncrowded. Only reason i do so is to make it more of a workout. Just to play devil's advocate, iv got a 3" scar on my head BECAUSE of a leash.
Leashes are, hands down, the best surfing item invented since the invention of the surfboard itself (except bikinis). And not for safety reasons (but that too). Those that say they know how to not lose their board....hogwash, they swim a lot, and their wave count is way less, and they fix more dings on their boards (waste of time). Bottom line--are you there to surf or swim?? But if swimming makes you feel macho.....go for it.
Truth right there. One of my sons took out his favorite board last summer on a small day with no leash. A twin keel fish. Board went into the shore break and one side of the fish tail snapped clean. Luckily for him it was such a perfectly clean break that I was able to repair it so that you almost can't tell it was ever broken. Had he been wearing a leash that never would have happened.
100%. I will say i don't lose my board when i go leashless often. But that's because if you ride a wave clean and kick out.... well you'd have to be retarded to lose it. When you don't ride a wave clean though.... there's no holding on to that thing. This is why i only do it on smaller days where I'm basically just gliding along (not much that can go wrong resulting in a runaway board). And swimming sucks. Again, it just makes those small days more of a workout if you do lose your board. But on any fun sized day, eff that. I don't want to not go for a certain turn or somthing just because i might lose the board. Or chase after it.
I rarely surf without a leash. I put one on when the board is new and can't be bothered to take it off/put it back on ever again. But I do have an old log from the 60s that doesn't have a leash, so when I do surf that board, I go leashless. But I used to never wear a leash logging, preferring the feeling of freedom when walking the nose. That all ended when I lost my board one day and it washed into the beach doing that log roll thing... bouncing around until it washed up onto the beach. When I finally got to it, my flex fin had overflexed and spider cracked all the way through the middle of the fin. And that was that. Leash from that point on.
Yes, 2 requirements for me to go leashes: 1) small surf and longboard, 2) low tide (i surf were rocks line the shore - I am frequently accused of being crazy. Not true, right??....Right?? Well, RIGHT??!!??)
Kickouts. Yes I surfed longboards for first 7-8 years as a kid and did learn to do great kickouts. They are smart and a solution. But....every now and then, even so, everybody has the board jump back into the wave and its "bye bye". Start swimming.....lol
even kids have leashes nowadays. kids without leashes always crashing into the rocks...last best invention btw was yoga pants. before that, the thong. let's get real
The "good ol' days".... Hockey goalies didn't always wear masks. http://sportsthenandnow.com/2009/10...0-years-later-not-required-but-never-without/
I’ve gone through three $1000 custom Pro goalie helmets in five years getting hit with pucks... I cannot even imagine how that feels straight face.
