Anything below 60 is considered cold water and you only put yourself at risk for hypothermia if you start peeling off the layers prematurely. There's no medal for being first one to surf with out a wetsuit every year.
you technically risk hypothermia any time you go outside & the temp. is below your core body temperature. life involves risk.
i dont think we care who the first one is? But if youve ever surfed in a 6/4 or even a 5/4/3 boots/gloves/hood, you'd know why we want to get these damn things off. and njsurfers right, life has risks
On the one hand, I'm glad they allow me to surf all year. On the other hand, yes I can't wait to get them off and surf in nothing but shorts. Sometimes I feel like 1/3 of my energy goes to getting into and out of the gear.
i like the suit. i like the hood. i like being warm in the ocean when it's 38 deg and the air is even colder. i hate hate hate taking all the sh*t off
i can surf pretty much the same in any kind of wetsuit (of course boardies, 3/2, and 2/2 are best ) as long as i dont have to wear boots/gloves or a hood, but boots and hoods kill me
i gotta say yes hoods are warm. but this is my first winter i have worn one and i have had alot of ear wax from wearing it. and more than the last few years i have surfed in the winter with no hood.
i don't mind wearing a 3/2, spring, or sleeves...but the thicker suits, gloves, & hoods are just pains in the ass that i could do w/out.
