All yous potheads and fockers. Eat clean, surf clean, ride dirty with unclean wahines and you won't need no substance.

Tore my shoulder apart repeatedly from 08-12. Original MRI said minor ligament tear among other things and that surgery was advised. Had to keep the athletic career going strong so I fought through it and slept/lived/trained in discomfort but c'est la effin vie of an athlete. Subluxed it bad again 15 months ago and surgery was really needed at that point. Had too much going on in my life outside of sports to deal with surgery. Went without and just rested the damn thing.

Come February, grom starts surfing every day. No more shoulder pain or even ache where it feels like it's gonna sublux or dislocate on the next movement. Has felt strong and amazing since. Diet and training have been impeccable for months. The no-impact dynamic resistance of paddling was PT in itself and healed the bag off me. Gotta think I didn't tear anything all the way through even though several components of the joint were severely injured. Had a partial MCL tear in the past too that resolved non-surgically over time.

Couldn't feel stronger and healthier these days. I've never been this durable. The gnarl can beat the dog balls off me and I feel great the next day. Take ten time more of a beating on the pavement when hacking asphalt hard on the Carver yet don't miss a day either. And I've eaten some serious schitt as of late when I've really turned up the speed and intensity on the Carver.

Best of luck with your recovery and a full tear needs surgery. Got sympathy for you but every next day gets better and you'll be kicking ass again before you know it. Now, wish flatness on us again and I'll come find you and kick your ass. That's not even something to joke about after what we've endured for 120 days and 120 nights here.

I'll reiterate that a full tear in a connective tissue requires surgery. It's no longer intact and will not spontaneously reconnect and heal. The part of the joint has been severed and needs to be reattached then heal in time. If you think this is not true you need to witness an autopsy where they display just how critical ligaments are to muscular control and movement altogether. The shoulder joint, in particular, is highly flexible yet very unstable. Having structures of the unstable joint permanently damaged makes it far less stable.

Now, certain muscles can be torn right through and be gone forever yet surrounding muscles will compensate indefinitely. Example: one of my quads is a tri because one head of the muscle tore in full due to blunt trauma. I did not know this and the three week time frame for surgery passed. The muscle rolled up like a window shade and you can still feel the hard knot twelve years later. Girls love the story. At any rate, my leg strength is far higher now from several more years of training and the surrounding three heads taking over.

Tear a bicep or calf right through and it's a different story. You're definitely not stoked in that case and you're gonna get cut.

FYI, like all professions, there's plenty of PTs that suck. Most do. Some are amazing. Look into things like Active Release Technique (ART). And btw, a good sports chiro with full practical knowledge of the entire skeletal system (not just a back cracker) can do wonders for all your joint alignment if they are top notch. Imagine how your car will hold up over time if the frame is bent and wheels are out of alignment yet you drive it another 50-100k...

Having 2 small kids, I'm a firm believer in reverse-psychology.

Yeah emass, that's exactly what my doc said, if I let it go to long it will roll up/ pull away. And basically will not be able to be fixed. And yes, I do have a full tear. The muscles around have been compensating for the bunk one. Still gonna talk to a pt today, can't hurt.

Listen to the ortho. Schedule the surgery. Eat the pills. Put the sling on. PT begins several weeks after. You're 36, braddah. You've got a solid 10-12 years or more left of studly dominance. Fix the damn joint and stop riding around on blown out suspension. You'll be back on spinners in no time.
