horseshoe crabs

    saw a bunch washed up sunday many had cracked shells are they sort like a ship if they catch a crack or hole in their shell that's it for them?

    From what I remember growing up, they are pretty tough - cracked shell and all. The ones you saw are probably ones that cracked or got crushed by shore pound or people. If they aren’t really crushed badly enough to “bleed” out, they’ll heal and keep crabbin

    One tough critter. Life span can be over 20 years, and they've been around for over 450 million years.

    I've seen them come back to life after being frozen solid. Threw them overboard so they could re-enter the gene pool.

    Horseshoe crabs grow by shedding their shell about once a year.
