    Just to throw it out there the word "haole" did NOT originate with the arrival of Capt. Cook. It was around before that. Although you are semi correct in the meaning. It does mean something along the lines of "those without breath."

    It is not just white people that are (well were) Haoles', in it's original form it was any race of people that did not use the traditional Polynesian greeting of placing your forehead and nose with the other person and breathing in each other's "Ha" (breath of life/essence/air).

    Although now, yes, it does generally refer to white people.
