This sounds more like it, haha, it's more fun when you just don't give a sh*t and go for it, can't agree more

Agree with Erock as usual. I'm cruising on the skateboard a lot. I've got an old hobie that rides more like a surfboard than your normal skateboard. I learned how to do floaters from riding up the curbs and back down.

Another bit of advice goes along the same lines as "if you ain't rubbin you ain't racing." If you're not falling down a lot you're not getting better. Get it straight in your head that you're going to make the drop and really dig in for the bottom turn. Keep your weight low and slightly back on your turns and commit to each turn. Pretty soon you'll be stringing them together once you figure out where they work on what section of waves.

None of this will work without a lot of time in the water though.

repetitive is the best tool to learning.do it over and over.maybe your riding too big of a board and try to do a bottom turn on a 2ft wave,i dont know, but for smaller waves you need something small like a dumpster diver or a rnf to get over those foam sections.its all in the hips.you have to lay it on rail and dig deep.surfing takes time.just go out and have fun.i think too many people are trying to make it as a pro or something and just push themselves and take all the fun out the experience.all top surfers will say,you never stop learning.the ocean is a twisted girl and she will beat the poop outta ya

This is great advice if you have the means. Wake surfing really took my understanding of weight distribution and ability to pump for speed to a new level.

There is a guy on youtube, some Australian dude who has instructional videos. Search how to __________ and type in what ever you are trying to learn in surfing. Check it out, he does beginner through expert advice on surfing and tricks and stuff.

    1. Buy a skateboard.
    2. Find yourself a concrete bowl (Long Branch).
    3. Spend hours learning to pump the transitions and keeping your momentum going without "pushing".

Not only will you work every muscle in your body, you'll learn to draw lines immediately or you will lose all your speed and stop. You can always tell those in the water that skate (or have spent a good portion of their lives skating). It'll do wonders for your surfing and will teach you how to surf off of your back foot (unlike snowboarding unless you're in deeeeeep snow). Spend as much time as you can in the water. It amazes me how many people u-turn in the parking lot and don't paddle out because it's small and inconsistent in the summer. Just my $0.02, but I think it'll help you out.

Excellent advice.............Also watch vids on youtube of Joel Parkinson, the King of Carve in my opinion. Don't just watch him on the wave. Watch his placement on the board, leg positions in and out of the carve, hip motion, where his arms are and watch where he looks as he sets up his next motion.

    Hey all,

I'd say that I am a novice surfer right now. I can pop up fine, start to do a little carving, but I can't ride down the line and carve the face of the wave yet like I see more intermediate and advanced surfers doing.

"How do I get better at this? (bottom turns, top turns, riding down the line etc.)

What are the steps to doing the things I listed above?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it! "
Not to sound like a wise a$$. But surf a lot and watch guys better than you. That's about it.
