I've been meaning to grab one of my aquarium thermometers and toss it in but havnet gotten around to it. The buoys are reading 36 degrees but I think the surf temp would be colder. Does anyone know how cold the water is right off the beach in NJ?

We went to Long beach NY the other day and a local said it was 35. Then we surfed in monmouth beach the next day and it felt ALOT warmer Si was callin it 38. When its bigg I think the upwelling plays a huge part in it. Im bringing a thermometer this wed. to know 4 sure.

You're ripping my card...yeah I've got new booties and gloves and I've been freezing after two hours, and really cant go any longer. The water in long beach was really cold, even with good rubbers.

I've been surfing Rockaway, and can only surf 6:30 to 8:00. I have never felt anything colder than last this past Wednesday. I even busted my a$$ walking to the beach on the frozen sand. Would've been more embarrassing if my 2 friends didn't fall immediately afterwards.

I'm so tempted to get out there but I only have a 4/3 with a hood/top underneath, booties and gloves. I think I'll get cold quickly but maybe I'll just try and see what happens.

depending on the quality of the suite, it would be tolerable as long as your rockin proper boots an gloves.

    if it's not.... get out.

I thought it felt like 40 or so the other day. It didn't feel that cold (36-37) yet. Was talking to a very knowledgeable fisherman who mentioned that the water temps have been a bit warmer then normal.

I've been surfing this winter in a hooded Xcel 4/3 w merino wool shirt under, with 5mm round toe booties and 5 mm gloves. If your stuff fits right and doesn't leak or flush you'll be good for an hour or two. I've been surprised how tolerable it is in the 4/3.

    Not today though.

Wool smartwool socks under 5mm booties, and my toes and heels went numb after an hour.

Temp in the surf can change within a few miles. Closer to inlets it's colder.
