    -10- -15F with 20+kt offshores.

4/3 no hood with boot and gloves could last you 'till early December, but after that its too cold w/o a hood in NY

No hood, gloves optional, booties advisable.

i went out in new jersey on friday with a 4/3, 3mm boots/gloves... A lot of people weren't wearing gloves tho, but the air/wind made it pretty chilly. I think the 3/2 is retired until May.

    Last week for the 3/2

My buddy and I were out on Saturday, Nov.6 in Marshfield (52 water temp with a stiff breeze) and we cut the session a little shorter then usual. Lots a paddling in some huge waves kept you warm. We were both in 3/2 with boots and gloves, no hoods. Got a little brain freeze being under a wave for a couple of seconds longer than I wanted but other than that I felt pretty good and could have stayed in a bit longer. I haven' used a bigger suit yet so can't compare. A couple of other guys were in their 5's ad 6's and they got out when we did.

Looking forward to Next time when I'll be in the thicker suit.

i think that in new england now, you gotta have at least a 4/3, hood, boots, gloves. i went out with my 3/2 last couple days of oct and had to get out within an hour and was uncomfortable the whole time

How cold is too cold? In my book, wetsuits are so good these days there's no such thing as too cold any more.

Guys surf in Alaska, Iceland, Norway, and a few years ago SURFER did a photo trip to Antarctica. Been surfing winters in NY/NJ since 2000 and while I might get pickier in terms of wave quality from January to April, I don't think it's ever been too cold.

Some advice on my first winter suit

I'm in Mass. and we see water temps in the high to mid 30's in Jan Feb and March. My local shop has a nice Bodyglove suit that is a 5/4/3. The problem is the Bodygove website says it's rated to 40 degrees Very water repellent.

What do ya think should I be getting a 6/4 or a 6 something? Thanks,

whatever you get, make sure it has wind protection and an attached hood. I have a 6/5/4 Gul Syncro and it's summer all year round for me in NY. If you get a good 5/4/3 with wind protection and attached hood you'll probably be okay.

the lined wetsuits add a millimeter of warmth. i did all last year with a patagonia r3 and a long sleeve hood underneath. coldest day i did was 38 degree water and 35 degree air and it was totally doable. like said above, with today's wetsuits you should be able to paddle in anything. taking the wetsuit off is a whole other story though!
