I was just given some primo gear and lures by an old wise man in my neighborhood.

What have you had success with as far as time, place, and method.

Please don't derail this is important to me.

Exacto! To catch a striper, you need a striper pole.

Beach, inlet rip currents, free line a croaker or eel, bucktail jigs in the rips.

Fo realz though...Fresh clams or fresh cut-up bunker on large baitholder hooks on a hi-lo rig or a baitfinder rig with a pretty large pyramid sinker (from 3 to 6 oz depending on current). I use heavy braided line (up to 65 lb test) on a large spinning setup (Penn 750 i think) with a 9-10' heavy surf rod with light to moderate action. that's bait fishing for ya.

as far as casting lures, you can go super light depending on the weight of the lure, or you can go up to 10' surf casting rods with fast action to work the lures. i haven't had much luck on lures at all, so i will not offer advice. i know a thing or two tho.

as far as the time to go fishing, i would say within an hour or two of dusk until an hour after dawn. that's when a lot of predator fish like to feed. a lot of the hardcore guys will fish all night then go to work. as far as tide, i would go with a moving tide, not slack. can be low or high, but you want to look for some cuts and dips in the sand where the fish like to hang out and eat. there are tons of different strategies. if i had the money, i would pay an old timer to share all his knowledge with me.

just remember...one fish from the surf is worth 10 boat fish. so much more rewarding to catch a fish with nothing but your rod/reel/tackle and eye for the surf.

go on bassbarn and look for a gullible jack@$$ like IHateLongbaorders who will whore out his spot and burn every spot in Jersey based on what was caught where when what tide what lure and the exact lat long and amount of ambiant light. then you can ride the coattails of fishermen who put in the work and time, and if you are lucky, you can jack their fish!

    good luck son!!

Thanks....I have a bunch of plugs and a teaser rig right now.

The live bait vs lures is alive and well in this newbies head.

I am looking to get as much oldtimer knowledge as possible hence the thread.

Any good (fishing) spots in NJ?

That's a bad question to ask. You think this dumb forum is bad with spot burning? You should see the lengths nerdy fisherman go to protect their precious NJ fishing spots. It's almost comedic.

I thought it might be a loophole to ask for fishing spots on a surfing site......

Spots will change daily from the surf...
Don't sit in one spot when using plugs. Move up and down the beach. Work the jetty's.
    Look for birds and bait.
    Dawn and dusk.
