As of now on Saturday at my beach it's showing 12ft @ 19 sec. I Don't even know what that is. And straight offshore.
" It's probably a slight bias to the Euro, but the 5 day track is pretty similar regardless. new model runs: 0zGFS slightly south of last run, but missed the NE Caribbean entirely, gets real close to the Outer banks on Sep 10 clips the outer banks as a cat 4, landfall near Virginia Beach Sep 10th. 0z CMC misses Caribbean to the north, barely, Cat 4 in the central Bahamas Sept 8, weakens to cat 2, landfall in upper keys Sep 10, rides up through Nples, and Just west of Ft. Myers at the end of the run. " --flhurricane.com
I remember Hurricane Bill in 2009 (I think) having a similarly crazy forecast like this. Hopefully Irma stays offshore and takes a similar track.
I'm seeing 13.5 feet at 17 seconds for Sunday night with the wind blowing 60 MPH. I think I'll go with my 5'8 twinner that doesnt have a leash plug.
The forecast for next weekend up here looks absolutely sick. I'm guessing every surfer on the east coast will be at Ruggles.
GFS models 06z take on Irma track this morning. This would be so perfect....tons of swell, no landfall.
That's still a bit too close for comfort. I'd like to see it at least 100 miles to the east. Everybody got their chainsaws tuned up?
I think I remember reading he surfed in Manasquan. To be fair, I think he was doing an east coast promo tour thing, which happened to coincide with the swell. I don't believe he went too far out of his way to surf there. He was in OCMD some time prior.
Garrett McNamara was at Ruggles and there were pros all over Rhode Island. There are a lot of places that can hold a big, long interval swell. If you want a crowd, hit Ruggles. At 10ft+ in groundswell the crowd thins substantially, and there are a lot of guys who can handle themselves in the water who will head out to be a buoy. Better hit warm winds for a 6'9!
Unfortunately, my "secret spot" isn't all that secret it appears. Last summer during a really good hurricane swell it was absolutely mobbed, cars with NY and Penn. plates. Unreal. I got some intel on a spot that's not really well known the other day but I have to do a recon before I hit it on a double-O day for the first time. I'll leave Ruggles to the pros and wanna-be's. If this forecast is even close to accurate, everyone and their mom is going to be out there, along with Surfer magazine, drones and who knows what else.
"This would be so perfect....tons of swell, no landfall." I see (899!) which is so crazy. Only select spots on EC would be able to handle any swell of that size and period.
Is it poor form to name spots on barrier islands with boat-only access? 'Cause I can think of one somewhere between South Carolina and New York in particular that might be pretty interesting to check out
Never surfed anything bigger than 10'. But based on these models I might get that op. soon. Ready for mo swell.
Boat trips during major swell events can be tricky. How and where to anchor, properre approach, etc. The boat could be dragged if there is no channel, or if the channel closes out and a big surge comes through. May want to have two boats, one that stays way outside with cold drinks and snacks and a radio, the other to get in and out.
