In a real hairy situ having an enclosed room is key. Keep stuff in there you will need (food, water, basic first aid). Garage doors are weak points, do not use the garage as refuge.

That's just silly. if a tree branch or wind blown debris impacts your window, a bunch of duct tape is not going to prevent it from shattering. That's not why you duct tape your window to begin with.

Debris impact will still shatter the window with the duct tape, but good sticky duct tape can keep the wind from blowing as much of the shattered glass all over the room after it fails. Reduces flying glass, and makes cleanup easier.

I thought that too. I also thought it would provide a little more structural integrity to the window from busting simply from pressure, not from flying debris. If a tree branch comes through, nothing you can do about that if you don't have them covered with shutters or wood.

I just arrived in Tampa with my husband. He will do his hobbies here, I will try to get some water time in the Gulf, thanks to DPs excellent advise. Hoping to be back to surf east coast Stirsay, or at least to look at what Nature has done to the beach. Sure hope there isn't too much debris in the water to prevent surfing this weekend,

If you change you mind call Wayne. It was reported that he purchased all the duct tape in Florida

Yep, the fantasy cast is back where it should be 2' mush, all is right in the world.

I'm far more excited for the next couple of days with the swell filling in from a low off the Cape. We don't need no stinking Matthew.

Dont get too excited to surf over here Betty. We have been having an ugly spat of red tide. Check your local beaches for advisories. We went to the offshore powerboat races by boat on Sunday and there was a massive fish kill off treasure island, madeira. The water was literally red with dead fish everywhere. It stopped just south of clearwater.

BTW, I was just reporting what a lot of websites were saying. I would think the tape might help reduce the amount of shatter glass.

However, I would have to set up a sufficient variety of test scenarios and collect and analyze the data.

Maybe we can get a grant and use a wind tunnel with a variety wind speeds and wind driven projectiles...

Well...between LBCrew and Riley/SBJ we already have a well established "materials testing" division.

Haha.. true. SI not only gives medical advice and such that has already been touted and we'll documented, but now we can give the UL label a run for their money.

Dang! I reserved a longboard in Clearwater near Indian rocks. The guy didn't say anything about red tide, so I hope it means it's clear...I figured it would be flat and I would just get to paddle and check out the gulf coast...stoked that husband was totally on board doing this even though he is a vampire and avoids sunlight. ...Happy wife, happy life...

BTW Tampa now has a tropical storm warning, WTF? Thanks Governor Scott.

    "5PM EDT Update 5 October 2016

NHC now forecasts landfall in Brevard county for Matthew at cat 4, then riding the coast up through Flagler county.

Storm surge estimates are 5-8 feet from Sebastian Intelt to the Savannah river."
