Actually did something like this for Wilma in '05 which came through during the daylight hours. We sat on our back patio (faces south) as she approached watching transformers explode and stuff flying around. Eventually the winds became too sketchy as the storm got closer. By this time we had lost power and the house was dark and hot being covered with hurricane panels. So we moved to the front porch for most of the rest of the action.

We started doing this in '04 when Frances and Jeanne passed to our north. At one point we wondered why our backyard neighbor was climbing around on his roof in the wind and rain. Turned out another neighbor's tree branch had crashed through the roof into his kitchen.

 

It was a piece of lumber that completely penetrated a Royal palm 30-40 feet above the ground. I stumbled upon the location several weeks after the storm driving around the area with some friends whose house had been destroyed. Andrew was a horrible hurricane. It is hard to comprehend the damage of such a storm in pictures or video. In person, every direction you look is just total destruction. People I knew that lived down there couldn't find their way around because all the familiar landmarks were no longer there.

Okay. So we are getting what we wished for. It comes as no surprise that hurricanes bring destruction along our coasts.
Yes. We hope for the best case scenario but stupidity will prevail and people will be in harms way. It's where we choose to live and what we choose to do that makes all the difference.
To say "be safe" is a matter of individual choice.

Be safe not stupid. Stay high and dry. Avoid the storm surf with the debris, dont be a search and rescue story.
The day after the day after will be the day. Be prepared in all three phases - offense defense special teams. Its on!

With two storms out there and tons of swell it looks like almost nowhere is going to have favorable winds to groom the swell. Perhaps Long Island on Sunday?

 

Some real crazy stuff went on there. Cars and trucks lifted and tossed around by the wind. Boats pushed miles inland. Sides of large buildings ripped off. Mind boggling. Andrew was originally tracking to hit much closer to Miami and my location which would have been much more catastrophic because the higher population. Fortunately, he swerved south. We lost power for half a day and then mostly resumed our lives. The Homestead-Florida City area took 5-10 years to get back to something close to normal.

I've often questioned whether I'd want to stick around for such a massive rebuilding effort. It would drag on for years. Only got so much time left in this old body. This area has become too crowded and waves are inconsistent. Probably cash the insurance check, sell whatever is left of the house and go somewhere that's not totally trashed. The irony is that the area I would like to move to is aboot to get pummeled by Matthew.

The atmosphere has that tropical system feel to it now. The humidity is different and the clouds move quickly. According to this site Matthew will be aboot 60 miles from me by midnight if he stays on the official track. Outer bands will be here soon. A little more prep to do then weight and sea. I'd go surf some pre-storm choppe but the spouse would yell at me for abandonning her. She's already giving me stink eye for posting on SI instead of putting up the last panels.
